Vent: I hate Kaiser Permanente.

This is a long one.

We switched from a really high cost PPO over to Kaiser since MH never gets sick. It was a HUGE mistake, since I've been sick off and on for the past 3 months.

So last week, 2 cysts decided to pop up on the right side of my face. I struggled with cystic acne in the past and have horrible scars to prove it. Needless to say, I am horribly fearful of another breakout like the one I had before. I twas traumatizing and expensive to recover from. It's taken 6 years for my scars to fade enough so that I'm comfortable, but I still suffer with body image issues because they are still very noticeable.

So I call Kaiser to make an appt. with my primary care physician since I can't self refer to a derm. until I see the primary physician. The earliest available appt. they have is in MID JULY. These cysts have more than doubled in size over the past 3 days and though I've been treating them with apple cidar vinegar, benzoyl peroxide, and refusing to wear makeup I fear they'll be MUCH worse in one week. I don't even want to imagine how bad they could get in a month!

So the operator leaves a message for my primary physician to see if I could get an exception and be referred to a dermatologist. The Dr. calls me back, asks me about the cysts and says "Oh, it's just acne and you need to get over it". Really? Then why *** are you a Doctor if you don't have any interest in treating me? What world do you come from where acne is not a medical concern?

The Dr. then tells me to go to urgent care and they can treat me there. Why didn't one of the 47 operators I've been on the phone with over the past week tell me I could go to urgent care for something like this? I guess I should have asked, but I always assumed hitting up urgent care for cystic acne is pointless, and that I put myself at risk for catching the flu or making this bacterial infection worse by sitting in a waiting room for hours on end because I'm low priority.

Eff my life. Eff Kaiser. I'm cancelling them and using cash to go see my old dermatologist in Bevery Hills. At least I know he cares, and is damn good at his job.

Sorry for the long vent. I had to get it out.

Re: Vent: I hate Kaiser Permanente.

  • i hate kaiser with a passion too, but more for their billing issues than the medical care.  the hub and i switched to blue shield, and the girls are still with kaiser since they've been there since birth.

  • I've always hated Kaiser. They're everywhere. They are like the chain restaurant of hospitals.
  • Having them defeats the purpose of paying for insurance. Each time I got sick the first available appointments were so far off that there was no point in booking it. So ridiculous.
  • I'm going against the group, but I loved kaiser.  my dr was rad and I was able to easily get appts - and they were open until 7pm!  it was nice to be able to go to one place and get my blood drawn, xrays, and fill prescriptions without having to go to 25 diff places.

maybe try and find a new dr. in the group?

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

My only option would be going to a different center. I called to book appts with all of the Dr's at my local one and not one of them had an available appt in June. Seeing as how the lady I chose was so rude to me, it looks like that's what I'll end up doing.

I feel the exact same way. I actually really miss it.

  • We have Kaiser with the POS option.  We've used Urgent Care a few times (on the weekends).  I've never had a hard time getting in to see the doctor within a few days to a week tops.  I've always gotten same day when I'm ill.  Now, I have never seen the primary care that's listed (by my choice) so maybe that's why.  I do see PPO physicians a lot of the time though so I've only partially used Kaiser.

  • I love Kaiser!  I love that urgent care is open until 9:00 every day.  I only use my personal physician for physicals and for follow up care on any urgent care visits.  If I get sick I go to urgent care.  I love not having to drive all over the city to get blood drawn, xrays, pharmacy, etc.  I've had them since I was a baby.  Maybe  you just got a sh!tty doctor?  It is better once you know how to navigate their appointment center.  You can also do everything online, which is a huge plus for me.

I forgot to add, all urgent care information gets forwarded to your dr and your chart, so your personal dr is always notified of what is going on with you, even if you are seen in urgent care.

  • My DH had Kaiser for about a year and had to go twice because he got sick.  Both times he went to urgent care and got in and out very quickly.  Once I dropped him off, parked the car and by the time I came up he was already back with the doctor.  Also I called for him and both times they offered him an appointment same day for later in the evening but he wanted to go and get it over with.  Both waiting rooms were very large so you were not stuck sitting close to people who were sick.  If you are paranoid about catching something wear a mask.  If you can get in they would probably be able to refer you to the Derm and you might have to bypass the PC/urgent care in the future if you establish a relationship.
