Stressed out, need vacation ideas

So I've started to hear some bad things about Atlantic City, and I'm thinking maybe it's not all that I thought it was cracked up to be... so I'm looking for some more ideas... We're either thinking of doing 4th of July weekend (July 3-July 7) or doing July 5-July 8th... Any suggestions? We are really watching our budget and really need some inexpensive ideas... urgh. frustrated :(

Re: Stressed out, need vacation ideas

  • I highly?recommend?Newport, RI. ?There are some really beautiful B&B's in town, but if you want to save some money you can stay right outside of Newport and just drive in. ?It was one of our favorite weekend trips. ?:-)
  • i love newport too (but i got married in RI & grew up in MA so i'm biased)

definitely see if you can get any deals on hotwire or priceline. if you decided to go, page me and i'll recommend some restaurants.

  • I just had someone recommend going up through cape code and all the surrounding towns. I've never personally been, but maybe just renting a car and driving around, stopping at B&B's would be fun.

Also maybe check out places in the Finger Lakes - you can rent cabins or find a cheaper hotel and enjoy the lakes, wineries, etc. We got married on Seneca Lake, so I definitely love that area. Around Seneca Lake, there are a ton of great wineries, there is Watkins Glen (a great waterfall hike/state park) and other stuff to check out.

    Hope you find something good!

  • Oooh, B&B's sound fantastic!

You can also check out Hershey Park in PA (I've never been but it sounds pretty fun), Niagara Falls (DH and i are going in Sept and i'm really looking forward to it!)...um...the Poconos...? I don't know much about any of these places though...

    GL!

  • We have been to Philadelphia for the last two July 4th weekends (bc the Mets play the Phillies that weekend..) and its been a lot of fun.  Besides the games, it's a great weekend to be in such a historical city.  There are events near Independence Hall and fireworks.  There are a TON of great restaurants in Philly.  Old City has a bunch of fun bars and the Rittenhouse Square area is a lot of fun to walk around- good shopping and beautiful buildings.  If you can find a hotel deal (try priceline or one of those last minute sites- use biddingfortravel dot com to help you figure out the best bids), you can even take NJ transit to Trenton and transfer to SEPTA pretty inexpensively (or do the bolt bus, which is cheap but has clean buses and good service).  It's a great, easy to plan, inexpensive weekend trip.

  • We were thinking of a mini-getaway to Baltimore and DC to see the aquarium and museums. ?
  • A couple of years ago we spent the 4th at Longwood Gardens in PA for the 4th.  It's about 40 miles from lancaster.  They have a great fireworks dispay.  If you spend a day or two in lancaster, it's a great way to end a long weekend.

  • DH and I just got back from New Orleans. We absolutely loved it. Very inexpensive and it?s only about 2 1/2 hour flight from NYC.

  • Oh!! I would have totally?recommend?NOLA too, since I was born there, but it is REALLY humid and hot. ?It is great to visit there from Feb to early spring before it gets too hot. ?
