POLL: babysitting. did you?

if you did, how old were you?

the teen is home with the bean today (and for the next couple of days).  i know she's completely mature and capable, but i can't help but be a little anxious.  i just want the time to go by and get home already!

of course, this could simply be that they were so cute and snuggly when i left this morning.  i just wanted to crawl under the blanket and join them.

Re: POLL: babysitting. did you?

  • Just my brother.  I was 10, and he was six.  And not for pay.  This was my sisterly duty.
  • I'm the oldest of 12 grandchildren on my dad's side so did a lot of babysitting growing up. I think with my sisters I started babysitting at 12. With my cousins and neighbor kids, I was probably around 13.
  • Once or twice for kids outside the family. My mom was always paranoid that something would happen, so she didn't really like for me to babysit unless she knew the parents well. I specifically remember sitting for one family though - I was maybe 16ish, the girls were like 7 and 4ish?

She used to leave me at home with my brother sometimes, but there are almost 4 years between us and it was when we were both older, late jr. high for me, late elementary for him.

    I'm sure they'll be great!

  • I was 12, I used to watch my little brother & another pair of little ones in our neighborhood.

  • I used to babysit my sister from the age of 11 on.  And at 12/13 I was babysitting a ton of kids in the neighborhood.
  • I started babysitting when I was 12. That's actually all I did from 12-15 as a job.
  • My mom never let me do it until I was a junior or senior bc she said I was too irresponsible.  =(

    LMAO!

I think I was 12-13, can't remember exactly.  I think it's different with sisters though - the teen sees what you do with the bean so she at least knows her personality, likes/dislikes, etc.  they'll be fine!

  • I was 11, I watched my 5 year old sister after school and during month long breaks (we were year-round) up until I was 15. No pay.
  • I dont remember how old I was when I started.  Maybe 13?

A bunch of my students keep asking me if they can babysit, but there are probably only a handful I would actually trust (all alumni though) so they're in college now.

But I'm sure I wouldnt be as nervous if my kid was older.  Babies are just too fragile.

  • Yup, started babysitting my sisters around 12 years old. They were 2 & 3. By about 13 or 14 I was babysitting neighborhood kids and family friends.  I did this until I got a job at 16.

  • My sister and I were similiar ages to your kiddies when I babysat her. When she was 2, I was 11. I actually remember it being a lot of fun.

     ditto.

  • I used to babysit all the time from the age of 12/13.  I watched everywhere from 3 month olds to 8+.  The 3 month old freaked me out a little.  The mom laughed at me because I did not put her down the entire time because I was afraid of something happening to it.
