Does anyone here have asthma?

Let me start off by saying I don't know much about asthma at all. I do know that it usually starts when you're young but I'm sure that that isn't always the case.

Something happened to me this weekend that really freaked me out and I'm just wondering if this sounds like asthma or anything you might know about. I was feeling normal, no problems what so ever when all of a sudden I started coughing. I couldn't stop coughing and when I did finally stop I couldn't breath. I was wheezing for about 3 minutes before I was finally able to get my breath back and breathe normally. It really REALLY scared the crap out of me. I've never had that happen before. It happened again last night but this time it wasn't nearly as bad. So, does that sound like something asthma related to anyone? Or does anyone have any other clues? I'm not sure if I really need to go to the dr. or not since its not someting that occurs regularly (yet).

  • I don't have asthma but it's something I would go see the doctor about, because what if you can't catch your breath the next time around?  Also, do you have allergies, it may be an effect of seasonal allergies too.  Either way, please see a doctor, I couldn't imagine the feeling of not being able to catch your breath.

  • I think I'm going to go see the dr. It was REALLY scary!! I don't have allergies (well, I do but I get hay fever which doesn't come on until around August).

  • I've had asthma my entire life.  Would only need to take my inhaler when I was playing sports.  I had pneumonia about 7 years ago.  And since then, I have severe asthma and see a pulmonologist regularly.  I've been on all kinds of drugs (inhalers, steroids, nebulizer treatments).  Most have not worked for me long term (that's not the case with everyone).

Let me ask you a question.  Were you anxious at all when those attacks hit you? Sometimes anxiety/panic attacks can also feel like an asthma attack.

If I were you, I would see your doctor.  They can do a chest xray and other tests to help you figure out what is going on.  A lot of people don't think asthma is a serious thing.  But, for that minute or three minutes it feels like an eternity and if you don't get treatment your airways will close.  It's scary.  Definitely call.  Please email me.  I can give you a lot of information on tests and drugs used for treatment, etc.
