Got this email from amazing girlfriend today....
I just came up with the perfect b-day present for you! Kelly Clarkson tix. So Excited when things work out perfectly!!!
I do not like Kelly Clarkson. All I know about her is she won American Idol when I was on Canadian Idol and were are twins (side eye)
I do not listen to that music. I don;t listen to any music post 1992 to be honest when (IMO) the music (80's METAL!!!!) (devil horns) died at the hands of Kurt Cobain and the grunge movement. (a topic for another day)
Point is...WHY????? would she think I would want this?
She is definately NOT kidding.
I am not being ungrateful, it's an amazing gesture, but it seems awful for her to pay that kind of money for something I really have ZERO interest in. I don't think SHE even likes her.
thing is she seems so certain and proud of her choice.
WWYD?
Re: WWYD??
Umm, go out for dinner and have lots of wine first? That could make it a super fun night.
I have no clue why she'd think you'd like it though.. this is a toughie!
I second this idea! It was really sweet of her to get you somethng like that so if it were me, I think I would just suck it up and go anyway. Maybe if you're lucky, you can leave early.
Agreed ladies, but here is the thing. She has not bought them yet.
So there is an opportunity, to change the outcome.
my question was going to ask if she bought them... if she hasn't, find out the date (unless it's your exact bday) and make up plans for that day. If it falls on your bday say that you think it's a great idea, but were looking forward to having lots of friends and mr man with you to celebrate the day?
Or you could say that spending that kind of money on a concert that you aren't 100% excited about isn't necessary and why not make a spa day out of it?
Start with "Really? I didn't know you were a fan" and hope you're correct and she admits she's not so you can suggest something you would both enjoy instead. Like running naked through the mall.
Or a spa and drinks.
your posts always make me laugh!
Wow, that is a sticky situation, and she really means well. I'm with Shannon. Go out for dinner and get smashed first. Then it won't matter what kind of music, it's all kinds of fun from that point onwards.
I was on the first season Top 30...
It was an....experience.
Oh my god. I'm so going to stone you for suggesting that Kurt Cobain killed music! *hiss*
But back to the question at hand- I'd go. I won concert tickets off the radio when I was 16 for a band I hated and had made fun of numerous times. But it was a free concert and so my friend and I decided we'd go anyways. Surprisingly, we had a good time. I've gone to a few concerts over the years because others wanted me to go with them and I've always had fun, even if I disliked the performer, because usually even performers whose genres I dislike can still get enough passion together to make for an exciting, lively show and you can let yourself get swept up in the excitement of the crowd. I hate country music with a passion but I still danced with the crowd and sang outloud to Gretchen Wilson. If you let yourself relax it's usually pretty hard to not enjoy a concert, I've found.
And hey. If you really hate it it'll be good punishment for your slander mentioned above
Could you email her back and pretend that you thought it was a joke? Is she that kind of friend?
e.g. You got Kelly Clarkson tickets for us?? Wow! Well, you are going to love going to see Englebert Humperdink for your birthday then...
Ya, I was wondering if you could joke about it and be like "Really? Do you even KNOW me?"
If not, I agree with teh suggestion to pretend you are unvavailable on the date, or get really drunk and go anyways and make fun of it!
LOL...I wish my name was Englebert Humperdink...maybe we'll tell people that's what we're naming this LO.
Mom, why are you washing my feed in the sink?!
