MH and I had this discussion last night and I want to know if I'm being unreasonable.
One of the ladies Greg talks to at one of his accounts (did you follow that?) had a German Shepherd several months ago. Her name was Kimber. They live out in the middle of nowhere on like 200 acres with basically NO TRAFFIC on their road. She was primarily an outside dog, but was allowed in the house. By 6-8 months, because she hadn't been socialized AT ALL, she was INCREDIBLY protective over their property. One day, the owner came home and they were taking groceries in the house while the dog was kind of in and out of the house with them. They were just a few steps behind Kimber, but it was HORRIBLE timing: Kimber saw a car coming down their road and took off to "protect her property". The few steps behind her that they were were just a few steps too late to call her back. She ran out from the snow bank just as the car passed their house and she got hit. ![]()
They've since gotten a new puppy (about 10 weeks old now). Greg keeps saying we should go out there for a playdate, but they want to wait until the new puppy (Tika) is a bit older/bigger. I don't. Because of the situation that took place in the past (no socialization with many humans, which they're working on, but no interaction with other dogs either), I'm concerned if we wait until the puppy (Tika) is a bit bigger (say 4-5 months old or older?), she'll already have developed "My turf, back the F*** off" attitude and could be aggressive toward Xena.
Am I wrong in standing my ground on this? I've said we can go out there, but we have to go out there SOON - like this weekend or next and then we can go out there a few times between now and when the puppy is 4-5 months old.
Re: Speaking of dog talk,... What do you think?
Xena does usually play rough, but only with dogs her size (or about her size). With smaller dogs, she's usually pretty stand-offish like "WTF is this thing?" Obviously we'll watch her because sometimes puppies are a bit too hyper for her liking. LOL But she's never shown aggression unprovoked (she growled at one puppy because he kept batting her in the face and at her eyes - HE was very aggressive!)
Okay, thank you... Greg understands somewhat but doesn't agree. He thinks in 2 months, it'll be fine.
The good part is, in 2 months, Xena will still be bigger than their dog - however, you would hate for her to HAVE to protect herself and end up hurting their dog (or their dog hurting her because she's scared). I would try to go sooner though. Just because.
Maybe you should talk to them about putting in a fence of some sort also - so this dog doesn't jump out in the road.
