refinishing hardwood floors

Has anyone had this done?  I know cost can vary based on different things, but I'm just trying to get an idea of how costly it is.  Basically the original hardwood floor is currently underneath the carpet the owner laid recently...I dont know if that matters, but its all I know at this point!

Re: refinishing hardwood floors

  • This probably won't help you at all..but I was watching the DIY channel the other day and someone refinished their floors themselves.  It saved them thousands of dollars. I think the show was "10 grand in your hand" or something.  I believe one of the contracters was quoting $50 per stair to refinish and then $2000 to to the rest of the house.  To rent the equipment and do it themselves, the people only ended up spending about $400 (again, this is if I remember correctly).
  • Just in case, you decide to try to DIY, here's the page I found on it:

  • I agree with Mariah (shocking!), if you are DIYers at all, you could easily do this - make sure you get all the staples/nails up from the carpet.  Make sure your floors are in good shape.  If they are real hardwood, you are probably on pier & beam - just need to make sure the subfloor is in good shape.

Our floors were re-finished before we bought our house & the previous owner said it cost them around $7K with prep, sanding/staining/sealing & clean up.
