Teachers come on in

I'm in an alternative certification program and I am looking for a job. I'm trying to budget our money very closely while DH is unemployed and I'm trying to figure out how soon I can leave my job once I get a teaching job. I would ideally like to have my last day at work be July 31 and have a few weeks to get organized before school starts. If that's the case, I'll get my last paycheck from my current job on August 14. So I am wondering, when/how often do teachers typically get paid? In my current industry (social services) it's not uncommon to work for a month without receiving a paycheck. Any information you can give me can help me plan! Thanks!

Re: Teachers come on in

  • We get paid on the 25th of each month. Only once a month. My district had a 12 month option and a 13th month option. I choose the 13th month option so I could get a pay check that same August that I started.
  • :::butting in::: I am thinking about getting into some kind of teaching program. I have my bachelors degree already, but in Communications. What kind of program are you in? Any advice teachers might have that have done this would be appreciated too. I need a more exciting job thats for sure.

I'm going through Texas Teachers. It's been a really smooth process so far. www.texasteachers.org

My DH works in the same district as MrsSchectman and did the same thing with the 13 months the first year to get a paycheck in Aug. Then you switch to the 12 months after that.

  • I did Texas Teachers as well.
  • I did Texas Teachers also. I get paid the 20th of each month, but new teachers get an option to have a "paycheck" on Aug 20.

In my district (C-FB) the Aug. 20 is not really considered a paycheck, it is considered a pay advance. I think it is for 800 dollars that is paid back to the district in 200 dollar increments for 4 months.

So your first true check would be Sept. 20.

  • When I started (but it was 9 years ago) I had a 9 month pay option (nothing during summer months, but larger checks thru the year) or 12 month pay option. I picked 12 of course (no way could I not get a check for 3 months!) , but I don't think it started until Sept of that year (as it is like a pay for work you've already done, not work you will do, if that makes sense). We only got paid 1x/mo on the 20th. I think insurance was a little less the first check though, because of their calendar cycle, so your first check was a tiny bit bigger than the others. Are you trying to find a job for this coming school year? Good luck! There are days that I actually miss teaching (there are others I don't ; )
  • I got my job 3 weeks after school started and at my school we get paid the 20th of each month. I started Sept. 9th and got a paycheck on Sept. 20th because they broke down my salary from Sept - August.
  • I worked at a private school, so I am not sure if this information applies. But, our contracts were set up to run August 1st through July 31st. I got paid on the fist and fifteenth.
