Wow...DH just called me to let me know my FIL just lost his job. My MIL does not work. He's 61, so he still had a few more years until retirement. The thing that totally sucks is he moved to the States about 5 years ago because his work transferred there. They still have their house in Montreal (mortgage free) and right before the economy took a dive, they had been trying to sell the house in the States but then took it off the market for obvious reasons.
So...looks like they may have to take a loss on selling the house in the States after all. He's working until the end of July (and has been provided a severance package as he has been at the company for 20 yrs or so), but now it's a question of whether he has to come back to Canada to find work or if his green card will allow him to find work in the States. So complicated.
I hope he can find something, but at his age not many people want to hire unfortunately (sad but true).
Re: Tough news
Oh Vicki, that sucks
I hope he can find something - is the severance package a decent one?
That sucks.
Was his greencard sponsored by his current employer?
oh no! Hopefully the real estate market will pick up in the states before he needs to sell.
As for age, I really hope he does find something. My FIL was laid off last year, he is 60 and did manage to find another meaningful full time job so that's good!! Hopefully he keeps in good spirits!
Thankfully, yes. So, although he is working until July 31st (Their anniversary and DH's bday - nice timing eh?) at least he's got a good package to hold him over for a little while after that.
I can't remember. I don't think it is, so he would be able to find something but I don't think he has a permanent green card and it's temporary (for a certain number of years). Does that make sense?
A friend of ours who is in the States I know was sponsored by his company, so if he ever wanted to change jobs it would be impossible unless another company sponsors him. I think that's how it works!
The laws in the US are so complicated!
