Has anyone done doggy foster? I would love to have a dog, but I'm having trouble convincing my DH. I might be able to convince him to foster first. He's never had a dog. Does anyone have any suggestions about how fostering works. Or any ideas to show my hubby how great dog parenting can be?
Re: Doggy Foster.
We're on our first foster (see siggy). Typically you search around and find a rescue that you like in the area. Some are breed specific others take in every kind of dog. Then you simply call them to volunteer. Some rescues only pay for medical care while others will pay for everything. Ours pays for food, medical care, and a collar. They also loan us a crate. Whatever they don't pay for you can deduct on your taxes though. All we bought was a food & water bowl and a leash (plus treats of course).
There are a lot of foster moms on the pet board. And on this board I know luck14 fosters for GROW. Here's a post about it from today:

If you really fall in the love with the dog some rescues will let you "foster fail" and keep the dog too.
It's a really rewarding experience. Chuck was one day away from being killed when we got the call to see if we'd foster him. Our dog Sophie was in the same situation a couple months ago and a rescue volunteer fostered her so I wanted to return the favor to someone else.
On a side note I'd also page or search for Pittieboo's bio & blog. She's got a lot of great info on dogs + kids.
HTH!
ETA: The petsie girls are really nice even though they sometimes get a bad rap. We get daily posts about people wanting to get rid of their pet because they are having a baby or people buying from pet stores (aka puppy mills) so it gets old fast. The board is really active in rescues and regularly pools it's money together to save and transport animals all over the country. Just don't use the word puggle over there call it a pug/beagle mix instead.
I have had 8 foster dogs. I have worked with a mixed breed rescue who mainly took in stray puppies and GRRoW which is breed specific to Golden Retrievers. There are tons of different rescues and an internet search will bring up many for WI. We still foster for GRRoW and the pay for vet expenses, heartguard and frontline if they have a stock of it and will loan crates if you need them. The dogs usually come with there own collar, leash, bowls, etc because they were previously owned and when the owner surrenders they send all the dogs belongings.
Human socities also look for foster homes also. If you have any specifics questions you can page me or go on the pets board. I'm not on that board but there is a lot of ladies on there that do foster work.
