who likes going camping?

until several years ago, we used to do an annual camping trip with my family in the summertime.  we'd always pick a site near the beach (mcgrath, leo carrillo, etc.), but the hub was all "camping at the BEACH?  that isn't camping!"  he always wants to head up to the mountains, but somehow that doesn't appeal to me and the teen.

we want to do a camping trip over a long weekend this summer, but i'm drawing a blank as to where we can go that isn't the beach or the mountains.  got any suggestions?  we go tent camping, but it's gotta be a site with showers and restrooms.  i'm not all about completely roughing it, i'm no girl scout.

Re: who likes going camping?

  • I would love to go camping again!  We have all the camping gear, but havent been since we've moved out to CA.

Hubs and I used to go camping every year in MI.  We would canoe down a river, camp out, canoe some more, camp some more and then have the the "river people" pick us up.  It was always a good time.  But we had to dig a hole, if you know what I'm sayin.

We used to also camp at Michigan's Silver Lake Sand Dunes.  This was fun, but close to town, so we would always go into town for dinner/breakfast/lunch if we didnt feel like eating "camp food."  So not hard core.

  • I camped once in college somewhere around Joshua Tree - not sure exactly where as the boys handled all the details and us girls just showed up. I think the only downside would be that it will likely be hot as hell over the summer. :/
  • I've been "fancy camping" at El Capitan Canyon up near SB.  We stayed in a gorgeous cabin, but I know there are also tents/sites you can rent and use your own tent.

Check it out, it's pretty amazing!

  • Yes, I love camping! If you want to go somewhere that is not near beach or mountains you should head to the desert.
  • I should add that I love regular tent camping too.  We went to South Carlsbad State Beach every summer as kids.  I know the sites sell out months in advance, though, so it might be too late for this summer.

  • I know you said no beach and no mountains, but Lake Lopez is awesome to camp at.  It's sorta got both.  It's up near San Luis Obispo.  There's showers and restrooms and even a market at the lake. You can rent a boats and stuff. A bunch of hiking trails.  And there are a lot of wineries to visit on the way.  And if you wanted to go to the beach you can drive about 20 minutes to Grover Beach, Pebble Beach, etc.

  • I love camping! Of course, we have a toybox trailor that we stay in that is equiped with shower, bathroom and kitchen, but it's still camping to me. We have so much FUN!!

We got to Vail Lake in Temecula all the time with our friends and LOVE it. There is so much for the kids to do too, including a miniature golf course, water slides, and an olympic sized pool. (Although I stay far from large pools that have hundreds of kids in them).

I love KOA! I've been to the Blythe location several times. They also have park models if you don't want to rough it too hardcore.

  • I've never been camping.  I have visited campsites during the day though, but have left at night.

    Not sure it's my thing...

  • I had never camped until I met DH but now I have been a lot.  Our favorite spot so far has been Reds Meadow near Mammoth (it's the mountains).  It's good for car camping.  It's kind of remote but they have some cool stuff to see nearby with a hike (Rainbow Falls).  They have flushing toilets, restrooms with lights and natural hot spring showers that are free.  We have been there twice.  They have a lake nearby (10-15 walk, not even a hike) where you can fish (I caught us dinner there both times we went).  You can take a free shuttle back into Mammoth(if you want to leave your car at the campsite and have some drinks with dinner or avoid the people who have done so) and eat there if you wish or take a gondola ride up the mountain.  There are some other things to do around town (rock climbing wall)

I would imagine there might be some lakes that you could go to if you want to avoid the mountains/beach.  Be careful where you go because sometimes those places attract a rougher crowd versus a more remote place.

  • Not I.  I don't like being dirty.  Mr. Mo just went camping in Colorado a couple weeks ago.  I stayed at home...and hung out with my dad.

That's how much I hate camping.

  • we do a yearly camping trip with our friends.  some of our friends are very outdoorsy and are part of a group who do rafting and rock climbing trips all the time so they love camping.  our annual trip has djs and huge dome tents with projected lazer lights and crazy outfits though.  not normal camping.  more like a camping party.  but we are all in tents.. and have campfire with smores.

  • I love camping!

Joshua Tree is the only non beach or mountain spot I've camped at in Ca. It's a bit of a drive but there's some good camping in Az like Sedona, we used to camp there every year growing up. Neither is good during summer, as you can imagine.
