Poll: Growing Up

Where did you spend most of your time while at home (i.e. your bedroom, the living room, outside, etc.)?

Where did your parents spend most of their time?

Did your family watch TV together?

Did your family eat together?

Did your family have any daily "rituals"?

Did your parents out your report card/tests on the fridge?

What will you do differently with your own kids (if you plan on having any)?

Re: Poll: Growing Up

  • Where did you spend most of your time while at home (i.e. your bedroom, the living room, outside, etc.)?  in the summer, we were always out at the pool (my parents kept us stocked with hamburgers and hot dogs and sodas so our friends could stay all summer with us if they wanted).  When it wasn't nice outside, we were always in the living room or kitchen hanging out together.Where did your parents spend most of their time? Wherever my sister and I were unless they thought we wanted privacy - then they were in the kitchen.Did your family watch TV together? for a long time we did - we had satellite TV and only one TV was hooked up to it until I was around 6.  Then we got cable.  It was exciting, although my sister and I weren't allowed to have our own TVs in our rooms.  So we still watched TV together.Did your family eat together?  Every night we had dinner together and every morning my mom, sis and I had breakfast.  And on weekends, all three meals.  Did your family have any daily "rituals"?  We ALWAYS watched NBC nightly news at dinnertime (once we got cable, that is).  To this day, if I hear the beginning of NBC nightly news, I feel like I need to eat.Did your parents out your report card/tests on the fridge? Yes.  Every single one.  Our fridge was embarrassing...haha. What will you do differently with your own kids (if you plan on having any)?  I don't know.  I think my parents did a pretty good job.  We don't have a pool, but I hope our kids like to hang out outside as much as we did growing up.
  • Where did you spend most of your time while at home (i.e. your bedroom, the living room, outside, etc.)? usually outside or in the living room...we weren't home a lot though because we were always doing some sort of sports or at our friends houses

Where did your parents spend most of their time? all over the house...they were always doing home improvement projects

Did your family watch TV together? Yeah when I was little, but early teenage years that didn't happen as much

Did your family eat together? we did, it was always late like 8 because my parents were workaholics

Did your family have any daily "rituals"? not that I can remember but we did go to a donut shop every sunday after church and then went bowling that afternoon

Did your parents out your report card/tests on the fridge? sometimes they would...but I've noticed with my younger brothers they have started doing it all the time now

What will you do differently with your own kids (if you plan on having any)? my parents did a really good job of spending time with us when we were younger...but when they started becoming workaholics that stopped and I didn't have a close relationship with my mom until planning my wedding...there are lots of things I would do differently and would take forever to list here

  • Where did you spend most of your time while at home (i.e. your bedroom, the living room, outside, etc.)? My bedroom most of the time.

Where did your parents spend most of their time? Outside (if summer: yardwork, etc.), or living room.

Did your family watch TV together? Sometimes

Did your family eat together?  Usually

Did your family have any daily "rituals"?  No

Did your parents out your report card/tests on the fridge?  ROFL, no. Never.

What will you do differently with your own kids (if you plan on having any)?  ---Encourage them more.  (I was a straight A student except I ALWAYS got a B+ in Phy Ed - that's how my school worked.  You got the grade once and the teacher just made that your grade EVERY semester.  I got sh*t for not being a "straight A student" and the B+ not being good enough!)

--Encourage each child's strengths/interests (I was a great student, loved drama, Student Council, but my parents always bragged about my siblings' athletics from years past but never my non-athletic accomplishments.)

--I want open communication in our family (I was always terrified to talk to my parents about anything.)

--We will NOT have kids if we're in a poor financial state.  I grew up knowing what it was like to have creditors calling the house, seeing my parents freak out about money, my mom having to borrow money from my grandparents or asking for $30 credit from the local grocery store.... I NEVER will let my kids see that kind of thing.  I may never be able to provide my kids with designer clothing, etc, but I won't let them see that kind of low.

  • Where did you spend most of your time while at home (i.e. your bedroom, the living room, outside, etc.)? Probably bedroom

Where did your parents spend most of their time? Mom-kitchen, dad living room and as we got older computer room

Did your family watch TV together? Not usually

Did your family eat together? Yes

Did your family have any daily "rituals"?  Just dinner together

Did your parents out your report card/tests on the fridge? There are 4 of us so there wasn't usually enough room for everyones

What will you do differently with your own kids (if you plan on having any)?  I want to make sure we all have dinner together everynight.

  • Where did you spend most of your time while at home (i.e. your bedroom, the living room, outside, etc.)? Outside, living room, or in my room

Where did your parents spend most of their time? Living Room usually

Did your family watch TV together? Sure did

Did your family eat together?  Most nights, yes

Did your family have any daily "rituals"? No, not really.

Did your parents out your report card/tests on the fridge? Sure did

What will you do differently with your own kids (if you plan on having any)? Nope - I feel very lucky to have the parents I did. Now MH's parents...that's a different story.

  • Where did you spend most of your time while at home (i.e. your bedroom, the living room, outside, etc.)? It depended on my age, but everywhere.  Outside, the family room, my bedroom.  I did a lot of after school activities so as I got older I would get home at 7, eat dinner, and then have to do my homework.

Where did your parents spend most of their time? Family room and kitchen.

Did your family watch TV together? Sometimes.  It depended on what was on.

Did your family eat together? Yes.  Every night.  And no tv was on during dinner.  In fact, that is still a rule when we are all together at our parent's house.

Did your family have any daily "rituals"?  No.

Did your parents out your report card/tests on the fridge?  When we were very young, but as we got older no.

What will you do differently with your own kids (if you plan on having any)?  I honestly don't know.  I think it will take shape as they grow up.

  • Where did you spend most of your time while at home (i.e. your bedroom, the living room, outside, etc.)? I would have to say kitchen.  It's where we did our homework and ate meals.

Where did your parents spend most of their time? my mom would be in the kitchen with us and when my dad came home from work, he'd eat dinner with us and then go watch some tv.

Did your family watch TV together? sometimes, like watching the Simpsons or ER but my mom really didn't watch tv.

Did your family eat together? yes

Did your family have any daily "rituals"? when my sister and I were younger, our parents would get the other one a small gift on the other sibilings birthday.

Did your parents out your report card/tests on the fridge? report cards

What will you do differently with your own kids (if you plan on having any)? I would prefer to raise David and any future children the way my parents raised my sister and I.  Mark's parents were more focused on earning money and not spending time with their kids.  (When I say that, I mean that they knew they had to work for their $$, his mom came over here with $5 to her name).   So, Mark has been instilled with a very hard working mentality, and there are times that I need to tell him, forget about cutting the grass, cleaning the house, spend time with David and I as a family.

  • Where did you spend most of your time while at home (i.e. your bedroom, the living room, outside, etc.)? When I was home I was either in the living room or my bedroom

Where did your parents spend most of their time? Mom-kitchen/living rooom, Dad-outside/living room

Did your family watch TV together? yep

Did your family eat together? about 1/2 the time.

Did your family have any daily "rituals"? We were a huge softball family and so a lot of our time was spent in the backyard (we were both pitchers and my dad would catch us) or at a ball park

Did your parents out your report card/tests on the fridge? nope, we were both straight a students but it was just kinda expected

What will you do differently with your own kids (if you plan on having any)? My mom and dad were wonderful, trusting, helpful parents (and still are).  K's parents are a little more strict and eat dinner together at EVERY meal.  I think we will split the difference quite nicely.
