Need advice re: riding in a taxi with a baby

Hi Ladies!  I will be attending my cousin's wedding in NJ in November so I want to make a day trip to NYC while I'm so close by.

Here's my (hopefully not too stupid) question...

How do you deal with a car seat in a cab???  Do people just end up holding their babies on their laps?  I can't imagine installing a convertible car seat everytime we hop in and out of a cab but it is obviously highly illegal to ride in a car with a baby who isn't strapped in.  Sorry if this is a ridiculous question.  FYI - he will have just celebrated his first birthday when we visit.

Also, I really have no idea what we'll do when we're there but I imagine that we'll eat lunch and hit up as many of the popular places as possible.  I guess we could take the subway but I am seriously clueless how to get around.  TIA!

  • You don't have to have the baby in a car seat in a cab.  I wear my LO in a carrier & buckle my seat belt & have always felt pretty safe.

Check out hopstop.com for easy routes from hotel to sites of interest on the subways.

    Enjoy your visit!!

  • Thank you!!

This is so funny to me.  You would be arrested in a heartbeat if the car wasn't painted yellow I guess.  I guess either DH or I will strap on the Baby Bjorn then get in the cab.  I take it the shoulder strap just goes across DS's body that way.  Yikes.  Better than nothing I guess!

I'll check out that Web site - thanks again!

  • If the baby still fits you can use a Graco Safe Seat or any of the infant seats that can be strapped in with a seatbelt.

My son still fits in his Safe Seat and I use that in taxis.

  • Unfortunately, he's enormous so that definitely won't work.

I'm all stressed out about touring the city with a one year old - AND public transportation.  I come from the land where we drive to a place three blocks away!!  Ha!  This would be so much easier if I could just rent a car then pull into a giant parking lot in front of the central park.  Big Smile
