If you drive an SUV.....

1) What do you drive?

2) Would you recommend the vehicle?

3) What do you like about it?

4) What don't you like?

5) How is it on gas?

I am getting a new vehicle next month  (my lease is up) and after moving home this winter, I have remembered the need for all wheel/four wheel drive.  Thanks for your input

Re: If you drive an SUV.....

  • 1) A Ford Escape

    2) Yes

    3) Lots of cargo room, folding rear seats, enough rear head and leg room for *adults*, easy to use controls (ie. not a mess of buttons on the dash!), 4x4, great size - not too big for parkades, etc.

    4) There really isn't anything I don't like.

    5) It's "ok" on gas. I get about 500km to a tank.

  • 1) What do you drive? Ford Escape (2006)

    2) Would you recommend the vehicle? Yes, i'm in love with my SUV

    3) What do you like about it? Like pp the cargo space and it drives very smooth.

    4) What don't you like? n/a

    5) How is it on gas? It's not to bad on gas. Depends on which engine you get, the offer it in a V4 or V6. I own a V6 AWD

  • Don't have one but there are some great hybrid SUV's out there if it is within your budget.
  • 1) 2008 Honda CRV

    2) I would def recommend it. I love it even though I didn't pick it. It was a Christmas gift from DH last year.

    3) What do you like about it? Very roomy, very comfy driver's seat, quiet, simple console (I hate it when they have too many lights and digital screens)

    4) What don't you like? DH didn't get the insert for the trunk that divides it into a lower and upper half. That would really help with more room for the stroller and groceries.

    5) How is it on gas? With gas prices now I pay $50ish a tank and it lasts 500km.

  • 1) Nissan Pathfinder

    2) It's a slightly older model, but I would defintely recommend the newer models

    3) Very roomy, its comfy for long trips, 4 wheel drive

    4) It's a pig on gas

    5) As I said it's a pig on gas, but I have a feeling that is because it is a few years old and they improved it on the newer models (my parents have a newer model).  We get about 450 km on a tank of gas but its about a 75 litre tank.

  • 1) What do you drive? Mazda Tribute LXV6

    2) Would you recommend the vehicle? YES!!!

    3) What do you like about it? Lots of cargo room, the powerful engine, having 4x4 in the winter, having a better vantage point (especially at traffic lights)...

    4) What don't you like? Can't say there is anything I don't like, although the one thing I would add is a moon roof ;)

    5) How is it on gas? Not too bad, I get about 500km per tank, and it's costing me about $40 to fill it right now.

    Happy shopping!!

I don't have an SUV, but thought I'd throw in my 2 cents about milage.  SUVs with V8 engines are the ones you hear the most complaints about. An SUV with a 4 cylinder or V6 will be surprisingly fuel efficient.

Some SUVs like the Escape, come in either 4c or V6.  If you're deciding which to get (may not be a choice if you want a 4WD) consider whether you are in a lot of stop and go traffic or more straight through highway driving(or side roads where you're not stopped all the time)

A V6 is quite efficient when it comes to highway driving - it's the stop and go that is hard on it.  Whereas the 4c in reality might not be much more fuel efficient if you're on the highway a lot because you're using a smaller engine to run the same weight.

FWIW, we have both V6 (van) and 4c (5 door hatch) vehicles and they get nearly identical fuel mileage.

Jen, I would have been very interested in a hybrid however, none of the local dealerships are equipped for maintenance of the hybrids because of the special tools required.  As a result, most local dealerships don't even sell the hybrid models - Ford for sure.

That sucks!  But at least they are smart enough not to sell them when they can't service them.

    I agree. I have a V6, but only b/c I have 4x4. If I got a 2 wheel drive, I may have been tempted to get a 4 cyl (only b/c I rarely drive on the highway).
