Doesn't Obama have anything better to do?

Re: Doesn't Obama have anything better to do?

  • I don't think he personally is asking people to get a prescription for cheerios, instead he is stating that the claims General Mills is making on their packaging really should be regulated by the FDA.

I do think that packaging needs to be re-done and that the FDA should be watching what is printed.

  • It says this: "If the government's enforcement action against Cheerios were to hold up, the cereal would be pulled from grocery shelves and consumers would need a prescription to buy a box of those little oats."

I'm sure that's probably a long shot but it's kind of silly.  Especially since the claims Cheerios makes are true (at least, in my experience - my dad eats Cheerios every morning and his cholesterol lowered almost immediately).

I just think there are probably more important things for the FDA to worry about - like why we are creating prescription drugs for such crazy things (like restless leg syndrome?  I find that one silly).

  • I can kind of see why it makes sense for them to at least crack down on all the claims.  I don't know the studies - haven't seen them and don't care - but the article did say the studies they're using as the basis of their claims are somewhat suspect.  (Of course, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of Americans who could vouch for the results they've seen, such as your dad.)

I think it's a bigger picture thing: labels can say whatever they want, and no one's enforced anything.  By getting people to eat crap by claiming it's good for you, it could be attributing to the poor health of Americans (which in turn doesn't help the healthcare situation/reform.)  It's a stretch - about as much of one as saying you'll need a prescription to buy a box of Cheerios because you know all hell will break loose if they enforce it to that level. LOL

  • I think there are a lot of food products that claim to be able to help with certain health issues.  Don't think it is bad if the fda helps to investigate some of it.

But man, if you do need a prescription for cheerios, Louie will be very sad.  He LOVES cheerios.

  • David LOVES them, especially the banana flavored ones.  He actually went into the cabinet yesterday, grabbed the box, sat on the floor and shared them with the dog.
