Earlier in the week my Family Dr.?s assistant spoke with my OB?s assistant to make appointment arrangements. When I was ?shocked? by the date I called OB, she told me that they?re very busy but not to worry ? my Dr. would give me my prenatal care until my OB can take over [this is what the assistant told HER on the phone]. She then tells me that my Dr. should order the IPS for me. I then called Dr. and assistant says it?s no problem ? come in this Thursday and we?ll have everything ready for you.
Fine
I went to my family Dr. last night. I waited 2 hrs for my turn. My appointment was at 6:00 and I got there at 5:00 [I know they work on a first come first serve basis] When he finally saw me ? he just stared at me. Then he asks ?so is there something wrong?? ummm no you asked for me to come in today to get testing paperwork! When I told him that he says he?s never heard of that test before in his life. [in a very rude manner] He then calls in his assistant and asks her ? she replies ?Oh ya?but you don?t start the testing until you?re 15 weeks along? ![]()
He then asks me when my OB?s 1st appointment is and I tell him August 13th ? he says ?wow..you?re going to wait a long time? I say ?yes but it?s ok because you?ll treat me until OB is ready, right?? NOPE!!!! ?I don?t do prenatal care; I know nothing about it - that is the OB?s job - not mine?.
He?s a Family Doctor and I?ve seen many kids in the office. He then tells me that it?s the OB?s job to see me/treat me and that none of this would happen if I had just gone with the OB he recommended [who btw works out of St. Joseph?s hospital on the Queensway] Yes that?s exactly where I want to drive to when I?m in labor or have a problem ? 1 hr away!!!!
As I was leaving he says ?you can come back here if you have any other issues? ? Thanks! he totally kicked me on my a$$.
I have NO pregnancy related medical care now ![]()
[Sigh]
So ? I am desperately looking for a new family doctor, preferably in the Durham & Markham area. (I wanted to switch from this Dr. anyways)
I?m not sure if I should just go to a walk-in clinic for the time being? I?m lost..
If you have any suggestions or recommendations I would be very grateful!!!
Thanks,
Lisa
Re: Dr. Issues ? Help? (long)
"IPS" seems to be a newer term. I've usually heard it as 'triple screen' or 'quad screen'. But this guy sounds dumb anyway.
I hope you can find a new family doctor that can offer you better care. But if not, and you're desperate, I would go to a walk in clinic every 4 or 5 weeks before that OB appointment. At the very least they can check your urine... and you can get your blood pressure checked. Hopefully they'll have a doppler and you can start hearing the heartbeat at 12 weeks or so.
I'm really appalled at this. I got such fantastic prenatal care it makes me want to get pregnant all over again. I can't say enough good things about it. What you're going through is unacceptable.
wow that is beyond ridiculous.
There is a website where you can search for a new family doctor accepting patients, but a lot of them take a few weeks to get in as a new patient (since they want a long appointment with full history), so for now I would do what moroccojade recommended and just find a walk-in clinic nearby to get your blood pressure and blood/urine checked out.

Anyone who is a family doctor should know how to do basic prenatal care, obviously he didn't give a rats arse.
Lisa, try the CPSO website http://www.cpso.on.ca/docsearch/
Also, you may be able to find a listing through the website of the hospital you want to deliver at or by contacting your local public health unit.
If I remember correctly from past posts, your Dr really sounds like a piece of work. I agree with MJade, that IPS is a new term, but he should have some idea of what you're talking about and should also know that most OBs won't see patients until they are around 16 weeks or so - unless there is a reason for needing more care. And I'm not sure why he's so worked up about it. It isn't like he really has to do a lot for you until you go to an OB - urine dip, weight, BP - those are pretty standard.
Good luck. Hope you find someone soon
have you looked into a mid-wife? they will probably give you a lot better care than what your getting right now. I would consider it if I were you.
my doc was similar - OB booked me in around the halfway mark for the big US. I was not pleased, and got my doc to put in a req for an earlier US to date the pregnancy (I didn't know any better, but was just concerned that I wasn't going to hear the HB or anything til I saw the OB). When I did see this OB, his bedside manner wasn't the best. Luckily, a guy at my gym noticed I was pg, and recommended the OB that he and his wife had for their kids (up in Port Perry). I just gave this OB a call, and got all my records transferred. she is amazing... to the point that after N was born, we asked her if she could be our family doctor (and she accepted us). very happy with how it happened, especially now that my old GP retired this year.
Ditto. Rach and I see different doctors in Port Perry, but I looooove mine so much, too. It's a rural center, so you'll likely have the same doctor that's seen you throughout your pregnancy deliver your baby. It's very much like a midwifery practice, except that they don't come to your home. I would definitely recommend that you call the Port Perry Medical Center and see if anyone there can help you. (I know it's a far drive for you, but it's really worth it!)
Mom, why are you washing my feed in the sink?!
I am kind of surprised that they told you to come in for an appointment when you are only 9 weeks along. Sounds like they do not have their act together. Hopefully you can find a new doctor quickly.
My sister uses her doctor and an OB and her first appiontment with her OB wasn't until she was 22w (same as it was with her last pregnancy). Her family doctor set up all her tests and u/s for her before her care was transferred to the OB.
That being said, is it common for a doctor/OB/midwife to see a patient prior to 12w when it is a pregnancy with no complications or issues?
NFL wife has a great suggestion. Call that OB.
Jen&Joe... I had to see my doctor as soon as I got my + HPT. (My thyroid meds needed to be increased.) I saw one midwife at 5 weeks... then another at 5.5 weeks. (Was deciding between 2 practices.) I went with the second group. They saw me every month after that. (And even more often near the end, of course.)
I have a MW (and I would suggest looking in to them too, seeing as you're Dr seems horrible), so I see them from the start, however, had I chosen to go with my family Dr, she would have done my care until 20 ish weeks, when I would have gone to the OB....I think this is pretty standard practice. I think you're Drs actions are appalling. Can you complain to the College of Physicians?? Or call the OB office and explain the situation? Maybe they will get you in earlier. I think that leaving a patient without pre-natal should never be an option!!!
Keep us updated....hopefully something works out!
Another option is to just call another doctor's office, if they aren't accepting new patients ask if they'll see you for your pregnancy (my doctor does this) and then if they don't ask if they know of any other clinics accepting new patients.
