Swimmer's ear really common?

I went swimming on Wed and noticed water in my ears. Thursday morning I did my usual ear cleaning with a Q-tip and it kind of hurt, normally my ear doesn't hurt. I am guessing I could have swimmers ear or something -is it really that easy to get??

Re: Swimmer's ear really common?

  • I used to date a swimmer and it was common for him to get it because of the amount of time he was in the water. But I don't know how common it is for someone to get it if they are only occassionally in the water. Can you hear the water in your ear (I hate that feeling)?
  • I was a competitive swimmer for 12 years.  I occasionally got swimmer's ear.  You get it when you're repeatedly in the water and your ears don't get a chance to dry out...bacteria begins to grow, and voila, infection!

If you're thinking you might have swimmer's ear, try putting in drops of 1 part household vinegar, 1 part rubbing alcohol.  The vinegar soothes the ear and the alcohol helps dry out the water.  A few drops a couple times a day should clear it up.  Or you could use my technique of shaking it out of my ears, or lying on the side with water in it to help it drain.
