IUD for women without children

Hello, I'm new here!  I recently talked to my gynecologist about possibly getting an IUC or IUD and he refused to give them to women who haven't yet had children.  I was wondering if any childless women out there could give me their IUD experiences, before I decide whether or not this is worth switching OB/GYNs over

Re: IUD for women without children

  • I'd switch!  Most of us here with IUDs have never had kids - plenty of docs will do it.  A clinic like Planned Parenthood is notorious for giving them to almost any woman, because they are so reliable.  Don't give up!
  • ditto OMG GP.
  • I got mine a couple months ago, no kids around here, my gyno was more than happy to do it. no problems, little more cramping, and little heavier flow. otherwise problem free. I got the paraguard
  • So has anyone had any problems with insertion pain or expulsion?  Those are my GYN's biggest arguments against letting me have an IUD (aside from him being old fashioned).
  • Insertion pain is standard, regardless if someone has had kids or not.  It will vary from person to person.  That's a poor excuse for not giving them to women without kids.

Yes, my first one expelled after 3 months.  I got another put in. Again, a poor excuse.

The only valid excuse is the risk of perforation, which is very rare.
  • Unfortunatly I live in a very small town with only 1 gyn office, and no PP clinics.  Thats why I'm debating if its worth the hassle of finding a new gyn in the nearest city, over an hour away.  Any more advice/opinions on IUD? Or any other similar experiences with old fashioned OB/gyns?
  • I had to shop around to get an IUD. My regular gyno wouldn't do it because I haven't had kids; my family doc wouldn't do it because she "doesn't believe in birth control" and won't prescribe it at all. I ended up going to a clinic like PP. It took a little bit longer, since they insist on doing paps, STD testing, pregnancy testing, etc. beforehand, but they were great. I've had no problems with it (Mirena) and would recommend it to anyone else.
  • I also have an IUD and have not had children. I did have to switch doctors but it was completely worth it for me. The insertion was painful, but the pain was super-quick and really not that big of a deal. I would highly recommend getting an IUD, I am very happy with mine!
  • I have ran into the same issue. I have called several local doctors and none will do it. They say that if you haven't had children your uterous is too small for the iud. :-/ ... Which makes me think, is it even safe for me?!?  idk.  GL.
  • They said your uterus is too small?  I have NEVER heard that in all the research I have done for IUDs.  That sounds like they are outright lying or something...
  • Sylver...I've heard that before.  They measure your uterus before they insert the IUD.  They need to make sure it's large enough so that the IUD is less likely to expell.
  • I recently discussed different options with my gyn and an IUD was one I was considering, as well as the ring.  She said that some women who have not had children will have problems but that 8 out of 10 (I think) were just fine.  She had a DVD that I watched which has all women who had children and loved it. I ended up going with the ring and so  far have been happy with it.  Is there any particular reason why you are adament about the IUD? If you are not thinking of having children in the next few years than certainly explore your options.
  • I do not have any children and I have an IUD. I like it because I do not have to think about. With the ring you have to take it out every three weeks. With the IUD I am good for ten years. My husband and I do not want any kids right now so it works perfect for us. I love my IUD :)
