M/S and commuting to work.....

Hi everyone! I am still pretty new to the boards but have a question:

DH and I are TTC #1 right now. I commute into Toronto for work and take the train.....right now one of my biggest fears is how to deal with m/s on the train! Anyone else been in this situation? And how did you deal with it?

TIA!

Re: M/S and commuting to work.....

  • In my situation I had both Morning sickness and motion sickness from the GO Train. DH would drive me to the subway so I can get a seat and just relax.

  • I take the train into Toronto for work everyday, too.  My biggest fear has always been throwing up on the train.  Luckily the closest I've ever come to that is throwing up in the parking lot.

    1.  Eat something at home before you leave for the train.
    2.  Have crackers/mints and a bottle of water with you at all times.
    3.  Have a plan - I sit in the mid section of the train where the bathroom is so that if I have to throw up, at least I am close.

I carry a baggie of mints in my purse and if I start to feel nauseous, I pop one in my mouth and it usually helps.  The only time it hasn't helped is when I've tried to make the nausea go away by myself, so pop something in your mouth (a cracker, a mint, anything) as soon as you start feeling nauseous.  I haven't thrown up on the train to date, although I do still feel nauseous some mornings. HTH!

  • Thanks so much for the advice PizzaBride! Much appreciated! I figure that I will make sure I am always on a car with a bathroom and keep bags in my purse! I would just hate to be "that person" who pukes in front of everyone and ruins everyone's day!
  • I know what you mean, especially since you generally take the train with all of the same people everyday...so you know they'd remember you as "the girl who puked on the train!"  How embarassing!

  • My sister has had crazy m/s with this pregnancy and one of the things that she found that helped was taking her PNV in evening with dinner (she had been taking it in the AM with breakfast).

That works, but some people are on PNVs that you take twice a day.  To combat that, I kept my PNVs in my purse and took the morning one at my desk when I got to work, so that at least if I was in a hurry to throw up I could do it discretely in my trash can and then change the bag quickly.

  • For me, the best way to minimise m/s is to never get really hungry. (Easier said than done.) This time around, Preggie Pops have really helped; if I start to feel queasy, I suck on one and that'll keep me going until I can get some food. I make sure I always have some with me (even now, at 18 weeks).

You'll probably need to try a few things before you find something that works for you. When I was pg with J, it was Jolly Ranchers; this time, Preggie Pops.

  • My friend used to pull over at the side of the road and puke. I only worked part time, but I puked nearly every shift. You just become a pro at it because you do it so much. Sad to say...
