Job/interview rant/thoughts

I interviewed for a position I really want with a recruiter.

A few days later, I interviewed with the manager at the company.

A week later, I interviewed with the owner of the company. It was over an hour and I thought it went extremely well and was confident I might get it or might be offered a position in a different department.

A few days later, I followed up with the recruiter. She said that interview had gone well but since I was the first person they interviewed they wanted to see a few more before they made a decision and that they would be having another round of interviews. Several days go by and I follow up, she tells me the same thing. She says the position is not filled and I am being considered and I should know by the end of the week (which was Friday and I heard nothing). This process has been going on for over 3 weeks now.

What do you think? Do I really have a shot or have they moved on? Should I follow up again? Any other words of wisdom?

Re: Job/interview rant/thoughts

  • I think you have a shot, but if you were the first they may want to see other candiates through the same round of interviews. It makes sense they want to see their options since there is a high unemployment rate now.

I'm sure they will see another few people and then realize you are their choice :-) I wouldn't assume they moved on and probably follow up tomorrow or Wednesday.

  • If it was my co., that would likely mean we had moved on.

  • I would think they would tell you they'd filled the position just so you would stop calling, but I've never been involved in hiring anyone.
  • Definitely depends on the company, mine company takes forever with the interview process.
  • They did tell me that they did not actually need to make a decision until the end of the month but I feel like they shouldn't have done the interviews until they were prepared to be serious.

I think it depends on the company and the workload of the hiring manager.  The hiring process at my company usually takes an extraordinarily long time but it is due more to the workload of the hiring manager and making the time to make a decision.
  • It sounds like they're just using all the time they have to see as many candidates as possible. That sucks that they're keeping people waiting though.
  • ditto, JD.

follow up with the recruiter once a week or so.  at least if you do piss her off, you wouldn't be working with her at the new company.  it's not like you are dealing with the company's HR dept or anything.

  • You have a shot until they say you don't.  I'm just sad you were the first to interview.  Fingers crossed that you made a very memorable impression!
  • Exactly, WeeMo. If I would have known that I would have tried to postpone it so I would be one of the last. It my hiring experience the early interviews tend to fade the more people you see. I sent a thank you card so at least I have that to remind them what a classy, sweet broad I am.
  • Given that they're not making a decision for awhile, that was a very smart move, Cat!
  • I've been in that position and ended up with a job. I wouldn't give up hope. GL!

  • Tough one.  One firm did this to me, and I only found out about 3 months later that they hired someone else.  They then called me back 6 months later offering me the job.  Fuuckers.

I hope you get it.  Any company would be really lucky to have you.

  • I know some companies have policies in place to interview so many people for a position so they may be doing that.

If the position is being covered by someone else or multiple people they may feel they should see as many people as possible to make sure they have the right fit.  Hopefully you left a lasting impression and they will call you for the job.  I would continue to follow up because that shows interest on your part.

  • I think you still have a shot Cat. I wouldn't follow up for another 2 weeks though. Some companies do have to interview multiple candidates for positions.
