Those who had NT or IPS testing

Did the U/S tech talk to you at all or tell you if things looked okay?  Ours is next week at 12w 3days and I'd love to start telling a few close friends that weekend, but I'm nervous.

I don't go back to the OB until 15 weeks.  She said if there's an issue she would call, but I imagine it would take a least a week to get results.

Just wondering what your experiences were.

Re: Those who had NT or IPS testing

  • I didn't have the testing done so I don't know the answer, but my understanding is that the tech doesn't tell you anything.  Obviously you will know if the baby has a h/b and they may point out the major parts of the baby, but I don't think they discuss any of the actual results.  My tech didn't discuss anything with us at the 20w u/s, so I would assume it would be the same.
  • The tech just did the measurements at first and then invited DH to come in and showed us the baby a little bit.  (Pointed out the head, arms, etc.)  The doctor told us that no news is good news and that she'd contact us asap if there was a problem.  But then, she didn't say that until I was about to go to the lab for the 16w blood draw.  I think they need all that information in order to get an idea of how the baby is doing.

Can I ask you a question?  You don't have to answer, of course, but how many embryos did they implant?  Does your dr think it's possible that you're carrying twins, or can they not tell until they do an u/s?  (I thought maybe they could tell by your HCG levels or whatever.)

No worries. We transferred 3 and am pregnant with one baby.  I've had about 6 or 7 ultrasounds, so if there's another in there, it's hiding really well Wink

We always thought twins would be great, but truthfully, I'm scared enough with one.  There seems to be a rash of bad luck with twin pregnancies on the success after infertility board lately and it terrifies me.

Oh, I didn't realize you'd had other ultrasounds already.  The thought of twins freaks me out, too...so much so that I asked the tech at one of our ultrasounds to "double-check" that there was only one baby in there.

  • There was a show on this week (probably on TLC) about women who didn't know they were having twins. They had had u/s and everything. Can you imagine?

I can't imagine.  But then again, imagine women years ago who didn't have U/Ss.  My great aunt had spontaneous twins and THEN triplets.  Can you imagine that?  I think I would have a stroke right there in L&D when the third baby came out.

  • Even though the blood test portion of my NT scan test was messed up by the lab here in Alberta( there were problems with the accreditation of the lab during month I was having my done), I did still get the U/S part of the test completed. The U/S tech did tell me that everything looked fine right after the U/S.  My Dr ended up confirming that 2 weeks later without the blood test results.
  • The tech did not tell us anything about the test or measurements that she was taking.

She did say that baby was very active and that is a very good sign. She also showed us legs, arms, heart, etc. She didn't ever say anything about baby being healthy or not though.

  • My tech did tell me that everything looked fine.  I think she thought I looked worried, so she did the measurements then said that everything looked great and brought my husband into the room.
  • My tech was so unfriendly...didn't say a word the whole time.  She asked if I wanted a picture and that was it.

  • I think that depends on the place. I went to a place once where they had strict no info given to customers, but I started going with Alex half way through my pg to a local u/s clinic and the guy is so nice there, he always volunteers info, but from what I hear, that is rare.

They have to give you the form back that they fill out with the NT measurement and baby measurement that you give to the blood clinic right after when you go for your draw, so you can see your baby's NT measurement. I believe anything under 2mm is good. Mine was something like 1.2mm.

  • Pretty sure mine said a general "everything looks good" and that the doctor will go over the details.

  • I think it depends on where you go for your u/s.

I went to a local clinic and they were AMAZING. The tech explained EVERYTHING he was looking at, what they look for, why they look for it, etc.

I didn't have the IPS but I had u/s at 11 weeks due to monitoring my massive tennis ball cyst, and one at 15 weeks b/c we thought I was leaking fluid. Both times the tech went into incredible detail and it put me at ease.

When I had a biophysical profile done at 36 weeks at the hospital, the u/s tech said absolutely NOTHING and was very impersonal. I had to wait for the doctor to go over the results. Made me so nervous!

I think it's all in where you go.

  • Thanks for asking! I was thinking the same thing...LOL

  • Ours is Monday!  With Ru, the tech told us that everything looked great etc.  She was very friendly, however I'm sure there are places/people that wouldn't tell.

As for the twin thing....my FIL is a twin, and his mother had no clue.  She was actually knocked out for the delivery, so didn't know she had two until she came around...and then argued with the Dr that he was wrong!
