kitchen/dining room updates..lots of PIPs

Now that school is out for the summer, I've been quite busy lately! My grad classes start in 5 days--I'm taking 3 this summer, eeek--so I tried to cram some house projects into the first few weeks of my summer vacation.

I painted my kitchen cabinets, thanks to the help of the D&R nesties, especially jjenkins! It really helped to brighten up the room. Please excuse the lack of window treatments in the kitchen, I cannot seem to find any that I like, so for now, they are naked! There is a TON of white in the kitchen for now, but eventually, we plan to tile the floor, add a fun backsplash, and replace the counter tops. Also on our list is to slowly update our appliances to stainless steel, which is a work in progress.

Once I painted the kitchen blue, I then had to paint the dining room because well, they didn't match! DH thinks I'm crazy, but it kept me busy!

Picture below: We've since added the cabinet door back on our pantry, but this is a good shot of the blue paint as well as the polka dot shelf liners we added. Major pain the butt, but they make me smile every time I open the cabinets!

We've since added the cabinet door back on here!

After: We finally bought a new dining room set. The one above we've had since we first moved in together--its my MIL's from the 70's. It was the one piece of furniture that we still had from our apartment (I'm slowly getting rid of everything, yeah!) I'm somewhat sad to see it go, but I love, love, love our new set!)

  • It turned out great!!!  It brightens everything up so much...and I love the blue paint, such a happy color Yes
  • Wow, both rooms look really great!  I would not have considered blue for a kitchen before.  It looks so cheery against the white.  I like how the white cabinets make you dishwasher blend in now.

I'm super jealous that your wainscotting and built-ins in the dining room were already painted white.  Ours were peach and gold... after spending a good 24hrs+ in there, I'm STILL am not finished with the primer.  It's the project that never ends.

  • It looks fantastic! So bright and airy. I love the bright blue paired with the darker tones. Great job.

  • Wow! That looks FANTASTIC!!  I would never have thought of that color blue for a dining room, but it really brightens it up. It looks great in the kitchen too, especially against the white cabinates. I really like the polka dot shelf paper too :)  That's a great new dining room set.  DH and I looked at that one at Just Cabinates before Christmas, but we ended up getting a different set.

Man, this makes me want to get started on my kitchen :)

  • I'm working on my Master's in Classroom Technology, can't wait to be finished in December! bethandanth, I bet you are excited to be finished!

I was nervous to paint it blue, but I thought, what the heck, its just paint. I actually made three trips to Lowe's for blue paint. The first blue was too light, as was the second. This is a bold blue, but its definitely grown on me. I might get sick of it in a year or two, but I'll just repaint :)

The polka dot shelf liners came from Target, I swear the cashier thought I was on crack! I was smiling ear to ear when I was checking out--finding them really made my week. Oh, the little things in life! After painting for 6 days, I really wanted polka dot shelf liners and I searched eveywhere for them!

I am cringing at peach and gold wainscoting/built-ins! Yikes!

  • Great job Shannon!  It looks great and so much brighter.  I love having white cabinets with stainless steel.  I think the dark accents on the cabinets work well for you too, nice contrast.

  • Great job!  I think colorful roman shade would look great for your window above the sink.
  • It looks so good!!

I love your dinning room set, where is it from? DH hates the dinning set we have now (I purchased it before we lived together so it's more my taste than his) and once we move that is one of the first things he wants to change.
