What would you do with this room?!
This is the house my friend just bought and she needs help with her front room/dining room. This is the first room they'll tackle and she's at a loss of what to do. Due to finances, the carpet must stay - bummer. She's looking for ideas and inspiration!

Sorry, I had to post the link cause the site wouldn't let me save/link to photos.
Re: What would you do with this room?!
Wowza, she's got some interesting decorating to contend with in that house. I would do neutral or black coloured indoor/outdoor or wicker furniture. I would also consider putting a sisal type area rug over some of the flooring.
Maybe she could consider some natural bamboo blinds as well and add quite a few large, leafy plants. Some hooks, a wardrobe or storage bench for towels and bbq stuff might be nice.
www.hgtv.com is a good place for inspirational pics.
Edit: I jumped the gun and answered re: the sunroom. Duh! on my part!
a lot of the ideas sound great, also a new light fixture would be nice. Does she have the budget to cut through that wall (currently has mirrors on it) and open it up to the kitchen? That would be nice to have a pass-through, or even no wall there. I would also recommend taking the swirly design trim thing off the top of the door frame into the kitchen, unless she likes country.
Looks like a nice house - tons of potential with just cosmetic changes.
Edit: whoops, just looked at the kitchen, and if the door from the dining room is next to the fridge, then they can't do a pass-through. if it's on the other side of the kitchen they could though! beautiful kitchen - i'm surprised at some of the other rooms!
- Paint it a neutral colour that really shows off that awesome fireplace.
- Put new lighting above the fireplace. Maybe even put a nice chunky wood mantle on the fireplace.
- get rid of the valences and put some more modern curtains up
- I would get some comfortable furniture but not spend an arm and leg on it (the brick and leons have some great sales). I would have way less furniture than they have in those pics
- Paint the ceiling (but not the beams) to match the walls or a shade lighter. I just wouldn't keep it white
- Looks like there are nice hardwoods in other area's of the house. Is there a chance they are also under that carpet?
- change the light in the dining room
- take that trim off of the door that is leading out of the dining room
- get rid of that wallpaper
