Family Secrets - Series Three, Part 1 - Inside the Lives of Children Having Children

Did anyone else watch this on Tuesday night:

We taped it and watched it last night.  Talk about heartbreaking.

I nearly sobbed at the end: one of the girls (the "All American girl" who got pregnant by her QB HS boyfriend, couldn't finish her cheerleading, go to prom with him, and WAS PREGNANT WITH TRIPLETS at 16-17!)  One of the fetuses was lost not long into the pregnancy, and then another passed away after an intestinal infection at 12 days old.

FOURTEEN, though.  Some of those girls were FOURTEEN. Sad

  • No, I didn't even hear about it.  I know there is that show 16 and PG on MTV.  It's kind of odd.  To me, the one episode I saw was not glamorizing pregnancy but it still didn't 100% capture what I would expect the hardships of having a kid at 16.  The one girl quit the chearleading team because her friends wouldn't talk to her.  She was also more concerned about dating while 6+ months PG.  I wanted to slap the biotch.  There are people that would love the have children and here she was wondering why a co-worker didn't call back to confirm their date.  PRIORITIES people, PRIORITIES.

  • Paula: I hadn't heard about it but it sounds heartbreaking.

Melanie: The thing I hate about 16 and PG is that I'm so much older than those kids that I know my priorities are different.  I can see a 16 year old being more worried about having a boyfriend than how their baby is.  It frustrates me so I don't even watch it.

  • Oh I know at 16 dating is important but still.  The mom was like, um no. Finish highschool, college, get a job and then think about dating.  The mom was kind of a flake but at times made good points.

  • This was actually fairly decent - I think it probably could've aired for like 3 hours longer than it actually was.  But it followed 4-5 teenage girls in HS across the country to highlight how things are handled differently.

For instance: the 14 year old in KY who got A's and B's but "wasn't happy with the B's."  She was SO BRIGHT... but her first time, she got pg even though they used protection ("It must've broke or slipped or something.")  Even though she was incredibly goal-oriented (she wanted to be the first in her family ever to graduate HS), she was so stupid and still wound up PG at 14.  Luckily, she got into a HS that had a nursery (it was geared toward teenage PG girls and mothers ONLY.)  But she said "I kind of just always knew that I'd be a teenage mom.  It's a cycle - my mom had me when she was in HS."

They also showed the differences in sex ed for two of the cases: PA vs TX. TX pushes abstinence only as its option; PA had classes specifically showing how to use condoms.

  • I didn't see that Paula but would like too, I hope they rerun it.

I have seen an episode of 16 and pregnant and pat of another one. It's upsetting but I think they are at least trying to show girls that it's not all fun and dress little babies in cute outfits.

  • I missed that...hope they show it again.  Sounds really good.  I've been watching the 16 and pregnant one too and it is frustrating to watch sometimes.  The cheerleader mom was weird but did have some good points.
