Moms- does anyone sterilize their baby bottles after every use...

or am I the only one who does it diligently? I tend to be a germaphobe(thanks to my job), so I have always done this for at least the first 3 months of babies life.

This topic came up with a couple of my friends who are expecting in the next few weeks.  I was shocked to hear that neither of them have ever sterized bottles for any of their babies in the past and won't be bothering to do it once their new babies arrive.

TIA

Re: Moms- does anyone sterilize their baby bottles after every use...

  • We did for the first couple of weeks, but then the nurses at the breastfeeding clinic I've been going to told us not to bother ? that washing with soap and hot water is sufficient, despite what others will tell you. And since I found sterilizing to be a huge pain in the butt, I decided to go with that.

  • I use the Playtex drop in system so after the initial sterilization of the nipples and rings now they just get washed in hot soapy water.

  • We had the Avent Steam Sterilizer and used it all the time.

  • Not really. ?I mean I use the drop ins bottles so it's just the nipples. ?and I run those through the dishwasher which I always put on sanitize anyways. ?however if I am in a hurry I just use dish soap and hot water. The few times I have sanitized I wound up with a buildup on the nipples and the baby wouldn't use them afterwards.?

  • I did it until Alex was 9 months. I wouldn't have it any other way, they have no immune system built up, and I wanted to make sure whatever bacteria there would have been after washing was killed. I think it's irresponsible not to sterilize for a newborn. Do those people also not sterilize pacifiers before first use and nipples, or boil water for formula?

BTW, I love your siggy pic of Lexy, she is so beautiful! Now we just need a recent pic of Julian :)

  • We've been sterilizing DD's bottles and water since sh was born. Yesterday at her 6 month check up the dr. said we can stop. Yay! It's such a tedious job!
  • I did it once a week up until 8 months.  He was primarily breastfed, but had to supplement, so he didn't use  them a ton.

  • As much as I've tried to get Danica to use a bottle, and failed miserably every time, I don't have an answer to your question LOL!

She did take a bottle when I was hospitalized with appendicitis, but my mom was the one who took care of that, so I have no idea... I believe she and Mike sterilized the bottles after each use. She's pretty anal retentive, so I am assuming so! I know I would.

  • No, never. Ok, well we did for about a day, but then got in to see the breastfeeding guru (a GP who runs a breastfeeding clinic in her practice) and she told us to *not* sterilise, for two reasons: first, it will ruin the gear; second, it doesn't actually sterilise. It will clean very well, but the equipment won't be sterile. I discussed this with a friend's husband (he's an anaesthesiologist) and he confirmed.

So no to bottles, pacifiers, etc. Won't sterilise this time, either. Just lots of hot water and soap and fresh cloths/brushes to get everything clean.
