WDYD?: FW emails w/false info

A couple of my family members and friends are frequent offenders.  This morning I got the one from my cousin telling people URGENT!  Go add your cell phone to the Do Not Call registry or all of the telemarketers are going to have your number!  This is not the first time I've gotten this one and knew it was false, so I replied (to her only) with the snopes link.  I usually either do that, or ignore it.  I've thought that by sending the snopes link they will do a quick fact check before forwarding the next time (and also they will have the accurate info for themselves), but they don't always seem to get the hint.

Just out of curiosity, what do you do when someone sends you one?  Send them the snopes link, reply some other way, ignore ... ?

Re: WDYD?: FW emails w/false info

  • We've had this problem before. We used to just reply with the snopes link, but it didn't stop. Finally, we just sent an email back to the few offenders and basically said that they need to always check Snopes first because 90% of the crap they send is wrong and it's getting really annoying. Now, we rarely get stupid stuff like that, so it must've worked :)

Anyway, I'd just flat out tell them to check Snopes and it's driving you nuts. (not just send a link back) Sometimes people don't know how to use Snopes, so explaining how to do it might help. That's what I did with my grandmother.

  • I tend to delete any e-mails that have FW in the subject.
  • Truthfully?  First I laugh at them and think about what idiots they are Devil

Then I just delete them - I think they pretty much expect me to delete them anyways since I am the "Dallas snot" and all

  • If it is something stupid, I just ignore. But if it is something that might cause people do something unnecessary or to worry about something, I'll send the Snopes link. About a year ago, my DH sent an email from a co-worker/supervisor about a special number to dial on cell phones to get emergency help. A friend and I looked on Snopes and found it was wrong. Since my DH works in law enforcement, I knew people might be more inclined to take it seriously, so I let him know so he could let others know.

LOL... i do the same thing.  just delete them.  no matter how many times i email people back with the true information - they keep forwarding stuff my way.  oh well.

I'm pretty sure I got that one from my cousin AND my MIL, lol.

  • If it's my mom, I ignore it. She still has dial-up, so it's not like she really knows better.  Anyone else though...they get one free pass, and after that I reply w/ the snopes link.  :)
  • If it's family, I tell them they're idiots.  If it's friends, I usually reply back with the snopes link.  If it's co-workers, I let one of the other co-workers rip them a new one and delete it.

I felt really bad for my DH because they don't have internet access at work, so he couldn't look it up on Snopes. And he felt horrible, but he thought he was getting it from a credible source. After that got sent around, their bosses mandated no more "Fwd" emails.

  • I was guilty of sending an "incorrect" forward a couple of years ago. One of the people who I sent it to was a friend of mine at the time (we're no longer friends, but that is for other reasons). Anywho... she definitely hit Reply All and e-mailed saying I was wrong and here is the Snopes link. Her wording was kind of snotty and she sent it to several of my family members and really close friends. In the end, she is the one who looked like an @ss. My family and a couple of my friends called me telling me how rude and inappropriate her e-mail was. So, if you want to send a "correction" e-mail be sure you only send it to the original sender!

Definitely.  I would never reply to all.  I leave it up to them if they want to correct themselves with everyone.

    Yes good stuff

  • I send the snopes link. It drives me crazy when people don't research them and just send them to people!

  • I send the link to the correct info. (just to the offender), the more reliable the better (like Johns Hopkins own website saying that is not their research) if its available.

Although it doesn't work for everyone I have friends who either stopped sending out stupid stuff or at least don't send it to me anymore (either way I'm happy).  After I've corrected them if I still get it I have to ignore.
