Mrs Buzly (re kitchen cabinets)
Okay, your pics are totally convincing me to paint my kitchen cabinets! they are the same dark color as yours were, and my kitchen is big but really dark because there's the one small high window like yours. I really want more light in my kitchen! Mine also have those lines down the doors and I think a lighter color might make them look more modern...
My question for you is, what type and color of paint and primer did you use? I love them - you did such an amazing job!
Re: Mrs Buzly (re kitchen cabinets)
Awww, thank you! You should definitely paint them--it will brighten up your kitchen and make it look so much bigger!
I used plain Zinsser Bullseye 1-2-3 primer from Lowe's (pictured below--always helps to have a picture). I was going to use Kilz, but the guy at Lowe's recommended this stuff, so I went with it.
As for paint, I knew that I wanted to go with Sherwin Williams paint. I consulted with jjenkins and she recommended the ProClassic Latex. I went with the color Roman Column, but they have soooo many different whites that it was hard to choose! I actually went with the semi gloss finish I believe because my french doors were painted by the previous owners and they were a bit shiny and I tried to match them.
I loved the Sherwin Williams paint--like jjenkins told me ahead of time, it is a little pricer than most paint (I think it was around $45 per gallon). It was worth it. I used a roller for the inside of the cabinets and a brush for the outside because with the lines down the front of the cabinets, the roller couldnt get in the groove.
I also recommend buying a good brush. I used Purdy brushes (around $11 each at Lowe's), and they were amazing! I usually just buy the really cheap ones, but this was a big project and I didn't want to mess it up. What a difference it made! At the end of the night, instead of washing it out, I just took a plastic shopping bag, put the brush inside, got all of the air out, and wrapped it up. This way, I was able to use it again the next day without having to worry about whether or not it was dry.
If you have any other questions, let me know! Good luck! It will make such a HUGE difference in your kitchen! I've been wanting to paint my cabinets since we first looked at this house before we bought it almost two years ago. I'm sorry that I waited this long!
*butting in here* I definitely second the Purdy brushes. I actually need to get some new ones but they are awesome. Shannon...the color you picked is actually the color I used on our ceilings in the first floor. In fact I bought the same color in a small can of the Proclassic to use on our trim but have been procrastinating and haven't done it yet.
Kelly...just a side note about the expense...definitely sign up for the SW prefered customer program if you decide to get that paint because you get a better price all the time. I think there might even be a SW sale going on now although I'm not sure on what products.
