Wedding Money Poll

I read that when it comes to wedding money you should use a certain percentage towards debt, certain percentage in savings, and spend the rest.

Just curious what people are doing/did.  You don't have to give specific amounts or anything.

Re: Wedding Money Poll

  • For now we have put all of ours into savings.

We paid for the wedding/reception/honeymoon on our own, so we needed it for savings!  We are going to try and keep it in there for now incase something would happen and we would need to use it to cover monthly expenses.

  • We used some to finish off items on the registry such as crystal and china pieces so now we have a complete set...or will in September once all the backordered stuff arrives!

Some we put towards the last of the credit cards for wedding expenses so we didn't have to pull anything out of savings.  And the rest will go into our savings account.

Slightly off topic, it was a pain in the bootay to deposit the checks made out to DH and I!  I had to change my name on the account and then add DH! Stupid B of A! *rant over*

  • We paid off credit card debt and put the remainder in savings.
  • Annabear- I have heard horror stories about that.  Luckily, I go to the same bank all of the time so the teller didn't even look!  I was pumped.
  • We put all of it on the credit card to pay for the HM
  • We ended up having to replace our hot water heater the week after the wedding so the majority of our wedding $$ went to buying the new one.  The rest went toward some other house-related items and a credit card we'll have paid off in August, super excited about accomplishing that!!
  • Put 1/4 of it in a savings account, the rest went to our honeymoon and stuff for our house.  We tried to use giftcards for all house stuff though and didn't do to shabby.

  • We put most of it in savings and used the rest to pay off credit cards.
  • We used some of it on the honeymoon, because we ended up switching to Aruba after the swine flu scare.  We weren't prepared for the extra $1k we ended up spending on the hotel, etc., so we used some of the wedding money for a few dinners out and some activities.  The rest we just used as a security deposit for the new house we'll be renting and moving into next month hopefully (just waiting on the final approval).

DH went to go cash our checks a couple of weeks ago and told him he couldn't because my married name was on the checks as well. So today we go to the bank, armed with our marriage certificate, and the teller didn't even end up looking at the names on the checks!

  • Ours all went to furniture.  We didn't get a terribly large amount and we didn't ever use the living room due to lack of furniture.

  • We put some towards spending money on the honeymoon and put the rest in savings.
  • We just put it all put in a checking account, so it's just getting used like our normal money.
  • We used a small amount for spending money on our honeymoon and the rest went into savings - for now.  We have some debt that it would cover so we may use it for that.  But we pretty much depleted our savings to pay for the wedding so it it nice to have it in there again.

DH and I have a joint checking account from before the wedding and this was no problem.  I didn't change my last name and they even accepted the checks made out to Mr. and Mrs. DH'slastname with no problem.  It must vary by bank and/or teller.

As for Chrissy's question - we used about 1/4 of what we received to get some things off of the registry and the rest went straight into savings.

  • We used about 40% to pay off debt and are probably going to spend the rest on fixing up our house and getting DH a motorcycle.  If we get a deal and do payment plans on the bike then that money about 20% will go into savings.

  • We spent a small amount on registry completions and will probably buy a few more kitchen items when we get settled in our house.  We added the rest to our joint savings, so I guess technically some of it has been used towards paying for the house inspection/appraisal/other closing costs.  We are thinking of making one fun purchase, like a new TV, a Wii or some other item we really don't need.  We have a good handle on the savings, so it will be fun to spend some of it on something that's just for us.
  • We put ours in our savings.  We're using it to buy furniture for the new place bit by bit.

We don't have any debt to pay off (other than my student loans) so that wasn't really relevant for us.

  • We put ours in savings but it will be used for finishing the house updates.

I had no problems with checks.  Our teller never looked at them.  If any were in my married name, I signed both my maiden and my married name on it.  I never even bothered with having DH sign any of the checks made out to both of us.

  • We put the money into a savings account. And then about 1 week after we got married, we ended up purchasing a Honda Pilot and that money went towards that. Big Smile
  • We are using all of ours to purchase a front loading washer and dryer.  It's currently in savings though.
  • We used ours to repay ourselves our wedding expenses and to help us move. Because of the two ceremonies in two drastically different states and the move, we didn't have jobs for almost a month, so it was really helpful

  • We deposited all our checks into our savings account and are using the cash on things for the house!

I was worried about the checks that had both our names on them before we were even married, but we had no trouble at all!

  • We don't have debt - we're saving ours for household items and registry completions (whenever we get to them).  We made a spreadsheet of the total and are deleting purchases as they're made so that we know exactly where that money goes.  We spent the GCs already, though, on a few registry items and a Dyson.  :)
