Mac users

What software do you have?  I have a PC desktop but DH and I are making the switch over with our laptops.  I don't want to spend a million bucks on new software, but would love to be able to function well.

I need software for documents, spreadsheets, photos, and grading (the Mac version of the program I use is cheap so I am willing to pitch in for that). Stuff like that.

Re: Mac users

  • P.S. I have Microsoft Office 2007 for Windows, but I have heard that I can use older versions of the docs, etc. ok on the Macs.  Is this true?
  • MS makes an Office version for Mac. It has Excel, Word and Power Point but Outlook is called Entourage.  You can get it at the Mac store for sure, I'm not sure if they sell it anyplace else.  Also, on Macs, Safari is used for internet access instead of Internet Explorer.  All the programs work basically the same way so you won't have much of a learning cure/

The great thing about Mac is that you never have to worry about viruses and you will not need to buy virus protection software - they don't even make one.  I've had my Macbook for over a year and it never crashed on me and I can count on one hand how many times it has frozen.  To fix it I just turned it off.

Oh but don't let them try to convince you to buy the AirPort.  All macs have a built in ethernet and any of your ISP provide wireless connection through their modems.

And finally, you can't open PC files in Mac but you can convert them into Mac compatible PDFs if you have Adobe.  You should discuss this with the Mac Techs tho.

  • i think you can use older versions of office but i'm not 100% sure of that . . .

i have the office suite but it is pinched from work. you might want to play around with iphoto before you invest in any photo software because if you don't need anything elaborate, you might be ok (we have photoshop on our pc desktop so i use that most of the time for uploading) ?

  • That should read "learning curve".

Oh, and  when you buy Office:mac get the Student and Teacher version (about $50) instead of the professional version (about $175).  the only difference is that the S&T version doesn't offer automatic updates but the woman at the Apple store told me that they rarely have to update Office for Mac because it's so trouble free so there's no point in paying for the professional version. If you ever do need an update, you'll still only be spending about $50 for the newest S&T version. The most recent version of Mac is 2004 and it's still up to date.

  • I found iPhoto to be hard to work with and it doesn't seem to be good for editing photos and stuff.  But if you go to the Apple store their clerks really know their stuff and will see that you get all the right software.  The people who work at the Apple stores really do know their stuff.  They aren't high school kids just looking to make a buck during summer vacation.

I was hoping to avoid getting the Office Suite for the Mac.  It's $175 for the student/home version and even with my teacher discount it's still pretty damn expensive.  I was really hoping to "borrow" it from someone if I really needed it.

  • One more thing... I use Firefox because I hate IE, any version.  That's still okay for Mac, right?
  • Really? I don't remember paying that much for it. I guess I was wrong.  Sorry.

  • I don't know about that but Safari comes loaded on the computer already so you don't have to buy anything.
  • Okay, not quite that much $120 for the S/H version, $400 for the professional version.
  • P.S. Thanks for all the great info.
  • Jumping in here a little late. But just wanted to give my Mac user info.

All new macs come IPhoto, dvd, itunes, etc etc. but not the IWork (mac's version of the microsoft office suite)

My best advice is to get a gmail account if you don't already have one and start using Google Documents. It is hands down the best thing ever! you can do spreadsheets, word docs, import pdfs, .doc files, images, make presentations. If youre already familiar and love it like I do, thats ok. But I find it an amazing resource for files. Especially because I will receive a lot of .doc files or excel spreadsheet files through email and without google docs I wouldn't be able to open them.

We are a mixed household - I have an IMac, DH has a PC, then we have a mac laptop and a pc laptop. So I can attest to having both and using both. good luck and I hope you get a shiny beautiful new mac! hee hee.

  • For the mac, yes you can use firefox. Safari works the same as IE.

There is also a program called Parallels that will enable you to put pc Windows on your mac & run all your windows based programs. It's about $50 and then you wouldn't need any new software. We use parallels on our macs.

If you have any questions about it, let me know.

  • Another mac user here :) We bought iWork, which has Pages (Word), Keynote (Powerpoint) and Numbers (Excel). I mostly use Pages, and I love that you can save files as a .doc to send to MS Word users. I think it's like $80.

Your new mac should come with iPhoto, which is very user friendly. I love it. I'd have to disagree with the pp who said it's not very good for editing photos, I edit all my photos with it and they look great.

GL with the switch! I'm so glad I did, I'll never go back to a PC again.

Thanks. Someone did mention this at work. That's nice that it's not a dual-boot. Lots of things to consider.
