Last week my DH ran the half-marathon and it was very hot- around 27 degrees by 8:30am (race started at 7am). Many people dropped out of the race but Steve heard after the race that a guy had gone into cardiac arrest almost at the end. Turns out it was one of the two people I saw collapse 25 feet before the finish line while I was watching for him (my DH).
This guy was 46 and according to a friend of his went into cardiac arrest because his potassium levels got too high because he was dehydrated. He was in a coma until his family pulled the life support on Friday.
I did not know this man but he's connected to several people I know and his kids went to one of the schools I taught at (not there currently).
Oddly enough though the marathon organizers and the local paper have not reported on this at all.
Just thought I'd share.
Re: Marathon Death
That is very sad.
Through the clinic I work out of I know quite a few marathon runners, and it's very common for people to get sick, even quite ill following a marathon. I don't hear very many stories of something this serious happening though.
