WWYD Re Dentist?

So I went to a new dentist on Saturday.  (My old dentist dropped my insurance).

Anywho, this was my first time there and he looked at my teeth, took an x-ray on each side and said I had 3 cavaties.  He then asked if I wanted my teeth cleaned.  I responded by saying, yes.  (Seriously who goes to the dentist and doesn't get their teeth cleaned?).  He proceeds to tell me that it'll be a $45 co-pay.  In my head, I was like damn, that's alot but since I haven't been to the dentist with this insurance brand, I guess it's ok.

Well I paid the $45 and checked with HR and I should have paid $0.  I can't even figure out how they got the $45 amount.  Nothing on the procedure co-pay schedule can add up to that.

So, do I call the dentist or the insurance company first?  I'm afraid to piss off the dentist since I have three cavitites that they need to fill.

  • I would call the dentist's office first.  They're the ones who took the payment, not the insurance company.  Maybe they'll cut you a check or even return yours if they haven't deposited it yet.

    The concern about pissing off the dentist?  He's probably not going to be the one you talk to unless he doubles as the secretary. He/she'd have to tell the dentist for him to even know or get pissed.

  • I paid in cash and do have the receipt. 

    It's a very small office and I just didn't get a nice fuzzy feeling from them when I went.  I waited an hour in the waiting room while what looked like one of their friends/relatives walked right in with food/pizza and sat in a chair.

    Do you think the insurance office would let me switch dentists if I said I don't feel comfortable going back to them.  I didn't even pick him, I was automatically sent there, after my old dentist dropped my insurance in December.

    Have  I mentioned how deathly afraid I am on the dentist.  I seriously have phobias.

  • If you were automatically sent, I'd call the insurance company and say "Hey, I went to this dentist over the weekend - whom you sent me to - and I was NOT comfortable there and was treated unprofessionally."  (To me, being made to wait an hour for family is unprofessional.)  See what they say and mention your dentist-phobia.  Maybe they know someone else they can send you to who specializes in fearful patients?

    But I would definitely call the office and say "I paid a $45 co-pay that is not required by my insurance.  Can you either pay me out of the till to refund this or cut me a check?"  I'd probably mention it to the insurance agent when you call too... because they should be made aware that this office is screwing with its clients.

  • Definitely call the dentist to find out what the $45 was for since you have a $0 co-pay with your insurance. And if you didn't feel comfortable with the dentist then don't go back there to have your cavities filled and call your insurance company and tell them you're switching dentists. I can't see why they would have an issue with you switching.

  • I called and they charged me under some deep cleaning type of thing.  What the difference is, I don't know.

    I'm still going to call the insurance and see if I can get switched to someone I'm more comfortable with.
