Does anyone here have to eat a low sodium diet?

If so, what are some of your favorite seasonings and dishes?

TIA.

Re: Does anyone here have to eat a low sodium diet?

  • I don't, but my friend's mom used mrs. dash instead of salt.

check myrecipes.com - you can search by low sodium recipes.

  • I am going to miss hot sauce and soy sauce so much.  But I guess it's a good thing that I got the reality check bc it means no more processed foods (or at least drastically reduce them).

I was sad to pass up the 58 cent Banquet meals at the grocery store.

  • you get what you pay for, my friend.

i'm sorry if you're not feeling wonderful, though.

  • What happened?
  • Migraines all the time.  I'm scared to get my blood pressure checked, and it doesn't help that it runs in my family on my dad's side.

I'm hoping less sodium will help with the headaches.

  • So...this is a self-diagnosis?
  • Go see a Dr. before you give up Taco Bell!
  • Not really, I just consulted with our next door neighbor at home who's a doctor.  Now I just have to go in to get my annual exam.  I can't imagine that it would be a good blood pressure reading bc of my diet.  It was unhealthy at my last annual (in 2007) but I haven't made very many lifestyle changes since then.

  • you do get what you pay for, food-wise.  I'm thinking you will probably need to increase your food budget, but hopefully your waistline will benefit. ;)

  • How is it reasonable to stay within a 1500 to 2000 mg sodium daily diet?  My cottage cheese doubles alone had 400mg.  My salad dressing has 280mg, and that's not even counting the stupid seasoning on the chicken breast I have from last week.

  • i gotta admit though, it's so easy to eat poor food.  i was living on PB&J sandwiches for a solid week a couple of weeks ago - but let me tell you, i paid for it when i stepped on the scale.

i'm now PB&J-free for over a week and my weight is back to where it was before.  thank god.

your best bet is to make everything yourself, i.e. make homemade salad dressing (olive oil + vinegar is easy).

  • definitely make as many things from scratch as possible.  it's really not that much more work, and you can control the ingredients.  not to mention, i've learned that homemade stuff tastes so much better, AND it's MM.  win-win situation!

  • Sigh.

I guess this means I can't keep pouring soy sauce all over my rice and dipping all my meats in it.

If this is how you normally eat, it shouldn't be too difficult to cut down on sodium.

  • are you pouring/dipping regular soy sauce, or are you at least buying the green-capped lower sodium version?

  • Well aside from that, I eat a lot of canned and frozen foods.  Soda too.

And I use the red capped soy sauce or the Toyomansi soy sauce from 99 Ranch (soy sauce + calamansi juice).  The green capped soy never had enough kick for me.

  • i'm telling you - get rid of that stuff.  all of it!

do you honestly taste a difference between the regular and low sodium soy sauce?  because i'm no slouch when it comes to the seasonings and the salt shaker, but i seriously don't notice a difference at all.  switch, woman. all that sodium is awful for you, and not just for the migraines.  especially if you already have family history of high blood pressure!

  • even the green cap has way too much sodium [even though I still consume it].

canned foods are the devil - if you are going to eat veggies, at least get the frozen kind.

  • I'm supposed to, but it's nearly impossible for me to keep it under 2000 mg per day :-P I generally don't add salt to my cooking (unless I'm baking), don't eat frozen dinners, try to avoid processed food, and eat at home as much as possible. Also, I look for lower-sodium versions of processed food (like stuffing, canned soup, seasoning, etc.).

    ?

I also eat a lot of candy and tell myself that it neutralizes the salt I eat, but obviously that's not true.?

I do.  I have been able to keep my sodium around 1000mg a day.  I have pretty much eliminated any processed food from the diet and it has made a huge difference.  I do cheat here and there though.

My suggestion would be to eat a lot of fruits, veggies and nuts for snacks and I use a lot of herbs for chicken and fish.

Also measure your condiments! This helps to ensure you're not ingesting a bunch of sodium.  For example I use exactly the serving size (1 or 2 tbsp) of dijon to coat salmon and then add dill or cracked pepper to add some more flavor.

  • Thanks for the tips ladies.  I love lemons and limes, so I don't mind having to use more of that.  I hate pepper, but it looks like I'm just going to have to get more creative in using herbs and such.
  • You should also take a potassium supplement, it helps to counteract excessive sodium in your diet, as well as reduce high blood pressure.
