let's talk: your first visit to the GYN.

this is the current topic over on MM and i'm kind of curious about your experiences.

how old were you when you went for the first time?

and, let's say you have a daughter.  at what age do you think you'll take her for her first scuba visit?

i was 18, didn't go to the doctor regularly, and my mom had no idea that i was sexually active. looking back, i should have gone at least a couple of years earlier - but my mom didn't really talk about that kind of stuff with me, so i didn't even know i was supposed to.  oy.

Re: let's talk: your first visit to the GYN.

  • I went a few weeks after my first cycle. My BFF's Mom was the one who told me it was a good idea, even if I felt completely normal. I'm really glad I went b/c the Gyno brought up all sorts of info that I had never been told.

If I have a daughter, I'll probably do the same thing with her. I believe in starting good habits early on.

  • I think I was 16. I don't really remember it. I rather go to the gyno that the dentist though.

I think I'll take my daughter after she gets her period, I guess. Isn't that when they say to start taking them???

  • I think I was 16-17ish. I had really bad cycels (cramps, etc} and told my Mom I thought I should go since I had read in a magazine that BCP would help level my hormones. She said fine to make an appt and go. So I did...by myself...

It was partially true, but mainly wanted to get on BC. Embarrassed

If I have a daughter I'd probably take her at her first period.

  • I was a late bloomer and didn't go until my early 20s. But I think the standard recommendation is either 18 or when you become sexually active.

I started my period at a very young age. I think a visit to the GYN at that age would have absolutely terrified me.

  • I went when I became sexually active, I was 18. I did not tell my mom but called my aunt for a rec to her doctor. I was ridiculously paranoid about getting pregnant an I wanted to get on the pill ASAP.

As for my daughter, I will probably suggest that she go before she starts college...if I dont  know  whether  she is sexually active or not. If I know that she is sexually active, I will encourage her to go then.

  • I was 13 but I went to the doctor for other health issues so to me this was just another one to add to the list. I'll take my daughter probably for her first visit around the same age - I'd rather have her feel comfortable (well as comfortable as one can be) and have access to that resource if needed.

  • I was 16. I had my first serious boyfriend so my mom took me in so I could get BCP (I had just become sexually active).

  • 14-- really horrid cramps that kept me in bed all day with heating pad. BCP cleared that right up and of course had other benefits. :)

I'll take mine when she starts HS to get on the pill. Kids have sex soooo early these days.

  • My mom took me when I first got my period at 15. I went to Planned Parenthood around 17 to get birth control - my mom was of the "no sex before marriage" mindset, I was not. So you can imagine how awesome that went over when she found it in my purse. Ah, good memories.

  • I was 21, at the urging of my boyfriend.  Not really to get on the pill for BC reasons, but I had really irregular cycles that I wanted to iron out and he said that it was the "healthy" thing to do.  Ha!  My own mom didn't tell me I should go!

If I ever have a daughter, I will have her start going when she starts her period.

  • Freshman year of college, age 17.

If I'd gone after my first period, I would've been 9.  Tongue Tied

  • I went when I was 16.  (I was deathly afraid of getting pregnant.)  To my pediatrician.  hahaha  but I saw the nurse practitioner at the office.  It was the only dr I had ever been to, so I didnt know who else to call.  Come to think about it, I never realized how awkward it is that I went to my pediatrician for BCP.  I never told my mother, she would have freaked.

I have no clue when I'll take my daughter.  I kinda dont want to think about it. Probably when she gets her first period?  In high school sometime?  gah, kinda freaks me out.

  • I was 19 or 20 and I went to the student health center at college. Not the best first experience, but you do what you gotta do. I didn't start going regularly though until I was in my mid-20s - I had regular cycles and had no need for BCP. I think if I had a daughter, I'd probably suggest it in late HS, but I'd hope that we'd have an open enough relationship that if she needed to go before then, she'd tell me.

    I would have been 8.

However, my first time was when I was 20.

  • 15.  Got my period at 10, cramps got worse and worse til I was missing school for 3-4 days a month.  Couldn't walk, couldn't train (I was a competitive figure skater).  Two GP docs had given up.  I finally ended up being put on BCP, and eventually taking drugs to stop my periods completely at age 19.  Still not sexually active (waiting for marriage) and my doc isn't big on paps for girls who aren't as it would be painful.

Since I can't have bio children (there is no way I'm experencing that level of pain again that I had with a period.  I would rather break a bone again, as at least that pain isn't constant...and they wonder how I can have a filling with no shot  :-p), my daughter hopefully wouldn't have a need for the same kind of care.  I have to admit that it isn't something I've thought about and is more likely to be something that I would play by ear.
