Baby's head measuring ahead of rest of body?

Has anyone else had this happen?  I just found out at my appt this afternoon that I have to have another u/s because at my 20 week u/s the baby's head was measuring 2 weeks ahead of the abdomen.  My midwife said that it is just borderline (I guess if it is more than 2 weeks different, they get concerned and I am right on 2 weeks).

Did anyone else have this happen?  How worried should I be?

Re: Baby's head measuring ahead of rest of body?

  • I didn't have this happen when I was pregnant but i did when DS was a year old and he went in for his shots, they were very concerned that his brain was swelling so they wanted to wait and see how his next round of shots went.  By his 18 months shots he was in the normal range, but still on the big side.  He just has a big head.  I hope everything is ok with your wee one.  Did they order another ultrasound?

  • Yep, I have another u/s on Thursday.

  • sometimes the tech makes mistakes measuring too... the angles of the way the baby is positioned, etc...

I know for a while there, the head is supposed to be much larger than the body. Did you have your u/s earlier in the range of 18-22 weeks?

My u/s was 20w2d...so right in the middle.  My midwife explained that they measure the head, abdomen and the femur to see how they measure.  They shouldn't be the same size (the head is definitely supposed to be bigger) but the head should measure X at 20w, the abdomen should measure Y, etc.

My midwife said not to worry, she is just being overly cautious.  It is hard not to think about though.

  • I know it's gotta be on your mind 24/7. I've had friends who have been called back for 2nd ultrasounds and it was all cleared up - and everything was fine.

     When's your 2nd u/s?

  • Thursday at 11:30.
  • <<<hugs Katie>>> I am sure it is nothing.
