intro and question :-)

Hi Nesties!  I guess I'm officially a nestie now too:-)  I know some of you from the knot, but for those of you that don't know me, my name is Meghan and I just got married at the Smithville Inn on June 5th.

I know this gets asked a lot, but I'm starting the name change process on Thursday.  I was going to go to the DMV first, then SS, and then the bank.  Is this the right order to go in? And when going to SS, do you have to wait, or can I just drop off the form and a copy of my marriage certificate?  I just wanted to know how much time this might take.   TIA!  And I look forward to getting to know you girls better!

Re: intro and question :-)

  • Hi - congrats and welcome!

I'm pretty sure that you could do either SS or DMV first.. order doesn't matter. I did SS first, and yes, you have to sit and wait to be called.. I went to the office in Glassboro, waited about 30 minutes to be called, and then spoke with the representative for a whole 2 minutes. They take your old SS card, and your new one is sent in the mail.

I then went to DMV - changed my name on license and car registration. Then I did all the other little things - some places let me fax in a copy of my new license/ marriage certificate, and some I had to do in-person. GL!

  • Hi Meghan - I'm new on this side too, just got married May 29!  I went to SS in Glassboro last week.  I went first thing in the AM when they opened at 9, waited about 10 mins, met w/ the person to give my certificate and old card and was out of there all within 30 mins total.  i received my new card in the mail yesterday - so it was less than a week.  I will go to DMV this week and then do bank accounts, credit cards, etc.  Good luck!
  • I don't really have anything to the name change discussion, but I wanted to say welcome to the nest!

  • Hey Meghan!!  Glad to see you over here!  Do you have any pics from your wedding day???

As for the name change, I think you can do either SS or DMV first, but you need to do both before you can proceed with bank, credit cards, etc.  I went to ss first and waited while they processed my information.  I am pretty sure you have to be there in person.  I went to the one in center city during my lunch break and it took maybe 45 minutes (beware of some interesting characters at the ss office).

  • I went to SS in Glassboro first and waited 2 hours. It sucked big time. Then the DMV then my passport. I didn't really have to go to the bank for obvious reasons.
  • Hi Meghan.  Good to "see" you over here.
  • Hi & welcome :)

I have the steps listed and some links to forms in my blog, on the side in the Our Wedding Link.  That should take you to my Bio and there's a Name Change Tips Link.

Thank you!!  Married life is great!  It's nice to have all the wedding gifts put away and just relax.  I just have to get our thank you cards finished!  How are you and the hubby doing?  I saw your vacation pics- looks like you guys had a great time!

  • Hi. This is the order I changed my name. At SS you have to wait to be called to the window in order to drop off the forms, then they mail it to you. I didn't have a long wait at all at the Mount Holly office, but I have heard bad stories from other locations. For me SS was faster than DMV.
  • Hi Meg!  Glad to see you over here!  I'm f/k/a jmhendy.

I have info in my blog regarding the name change.  I went to the Mt. Holly SSA office and was in and out in 15 minutes.  I went to the DMV on 42 in Turnersville and waited about a half hour.

  • I asked this same exact question a few weeks ago and got a lot of great answers. While I have not yet started the process (yes, I am slow!), here is a summary of the answers:

    • Social Security - the form is online; go to a local office; some offices may require an appt, so call first
    • DMV - you need your normal "6 points" plus certified marriage cert; don't forget to change both your driver's license and vehicle registration
    • Bank - new driver's license and certified marriage cert
    • Credit Cards - as pp mentioned, most can be changed online or over the phone
    • Passport - bring signed passport renewal app signed in married name, fees, marriage cert with raised seal

    Good Luck!
