In DIRE need of volunteers for my camp!
Hey Ladies,
Not sure if any of you remember, but I have been involved with a camp for children infected and affected by HIV/AIDS for 15 years now. Unfortunately we struggle more and more every year to get enough volunteers to run camp. This year is worst than passed years. We need about 60 full time volunteers to run camp and so far we only have 7!!!!! So if you can please check out the link and PLEASE pass it along to anyone that might be interested it would really help. It breaks my heart that there are going to be some kids that cannot go because we dont have enough volunteers. It is the most rewarding experience you can imagine.

Re: In DIRE need of volunteers for my camp!
Hey,
Unfortunately, I cannot personally help, but part of my full time job is recruiting volunteers for programs for the non-profit I work for. Not sure what you have done so far, but here are a few things that you could try that came to mind:
- Reach out to colleges/universities-- Education or health sciences majors might be looking for volunteer work
-Have you advertised this on idealist.org? This is a website specifically for non-profit or volunteer work
-Reach out to businesses in the community...maybe they can send groups of volunteers every...perhaps health based orgs?
- I am not sure about how to go about recruiting this demographic, but there are a ton of unemployed people out there with time to volunteer (I had a lot of success with this this year). Maybe staffing agencies, the dept of labor or unemployment could point you in the right direction?
Sorry if you have already done these. Feel free to PM me if I can help with anything! Good luck!!! This sounds like such a great program and I agree that it would be heartbreaking for kids to miss out due to lack of volunteers.
Not to sound ungrateful, but yes, we did most of that. We suffer when our week is the last week in August because teachers are moving back into their classrooms and college kids are moving back into their dorms. We have an ad on idealist and craigslist. We have reached out to several colleges in the area. We have reached out to the hospitals and nursing schools as well. Now sure how to get the word out to the unemployed, but that is a good point.
It is tough, volunteers we have had for years just cant afford to take the time off of work that week, when that is what they have done in the past. Plus we have people like me who go and start families and that impacts our returning volunteers lol
thanks for the input. Any ideas are welcome
I figured you probably explored those avenues! Have you maybe tried going through either college career services for alumni? I know that 09 college grads are having a heck of a time finding employment. Maybe you could advertise the opportunity for its potential as a resume builder and also a chance to network (in addition to the obvious philanthropic value!).
What about retirees? This might be a hard demographic just bc of the physical activity involved in camp, but maybe a retired educator or health professional would be interested.
Just a couple more ideas. Again, if you might have already done these...I am just thinking off the top of my head! Good luck!
Is it sleep-away camp or day camp?
Perhaps sites that cater to teachers like njhire & njschooljobs might allow you to post on them. There are lots of people in the market for teaching jobs and Krista has the right idea about it being good for a resume.
Also, not to be nit-picky but my teacher brain doesn't turn off in the summer. In the craigslist ad, someone missed an "a" when typing "collaboration." The ad says "collabortion."
Good luck with the volunteer search.
If I think of anyone who'd be available, I will pass along the info. It sounds like a great program and I hope you get enough volunteers so that as many kids as possible can enjoy it.
I wish I could help but I'm starting at a brand new school come September and I'm not sure when I'll need to go in and set up. I'd hate to sign up and have to back out because of workshops or whatever. Plus, I know that I am unavailable on the date of the training.
Are there other ways of helping? Does camp need donations of supplies or something?
