Wisdom Teeth

Has anyone had theirs yanked? Or, do you still have them?

I still have all 4, all impacted. Last time I went to the dentist, he said we'd evaluate at my next appointment when the time to pull them would be. I'm fearing it will be soon b/c they're really starting to press and hurt. I'm such a baby with pain :(

Re: Wisdom Teeth

  • I had all four of mine yanked out when I was 21, (8 years ago..yikes!).  It wasn't bad at all - I had heard horror stories, but I wasn't in much pain after the procedure and was pleasantly surprised.  As soon as I got home, I put ice on my face and had no bruising.  Plus, they'll give you a prescription for some strong pain meds, which help a lot! :)
  • I had all 4 of mine taken out about 6-7 years ago.  Right away I felt fine, no pain or anything, but the next 3-4 days were awful. I also  had pain meds and they did help but the whole experience was pretty terrible.  Good luck and maybe it won't be so bad for you!

  • I was always told I didnt have wisdom teeth. Then I had xrays done for the first time in like 5 years a few months back, and the technicaian was marveling at my 2 cute little wisdom teeth. WTF! I dont know where the came from, but apparntly they must have always been there, but according to the dr, they will probably never come in. DHs were impacted and actually caused his bottom teeth to shift, which pretty much defeted his teenage years in braces.  Good luck
  • I had my 3 taken out about 3 years ago.  If/when you have them taken out, get put under.  I was nervous going in, but when I went pack, they put some valium in and I don't remember after that!  What I was worried about is having a terrible reaction to waking up (this is from prior surgeries), but I didn't feel any of that.  I felt like I could drive home.  By the time DH picked me up from my parents house, I went home and cleaned the house for a good period of time.  I did get dry socket in one tooth so it hurt for a bit, but there's nothing that the doctor can do to prevent that.  Just had to go back several more times to get it re-dressed.

What's dry socket? I can infer from the name.. sounds like a pain in the butt.

  • I had four of them that were impacted, and had them removed when I was 18. I was put under, so I do not remember anything from the actual procedure, and did not feel much pain after either - although that is because I was sucking down Tylenol with Codeine and pretty much do not remember anything for the two days after the surgery - haha! Get the pain meds, and you will hopefully be fine :) My face did swell a bit in the few days following the surgery, but I didn't have any bruising. I wouldn't make any plans though, just in case. Good Luck!!

  • I had all four impacted and got them removed right before I went away to college. Honestly, it sucked. And my mom took away my pain meds.

  • I had two that poked through.  I got the gas and they were both pulled and stitched.  It hurt really bad.  I was in so much pain by the time I got home that I just took the pain meds.  I was fine three days later.  I'm also a huge wuss for pain.
  • dry socket is when the blood doesn't clot correctly. ?You'll know if you have it because it'll hurt and your mouth will smell! ?Like I said, there's nothing you can really do about it. ?I think it's more common with smokers, women (maybe), and women who are on birth control. ?But I just went into my doctor, he put some dressing in the hole to help it heal and the pain went away almost instantly. ?You'll have to have it redressed a couple of times, but it's ok.
  • I had them taken out in college.  my mom convinced me not to go under bc of the risks, so I didnt.  It was awful.

The recovery was painful but not as bad as I thought it would be.  I stuck to tylenol and didnt need prescription pain meds at all.

  • I had all 4 taken out after high school, maybe 20-21? I did not have any swelling and the pain was good for day 1 and 2, but on day 3 I got dry sockets in both of the lowers and didn't sleep for an entire day. I went back to the doc and he said some people say those are worse than childbirth. Well, I can attest to that. The pain from the dry sockets was worse than recovering from my c-section last year. It was awful!

But, my headaches from that went away and remember that everyone's situation is different. You may have an easy recovery!

  • I had one and a molar taken out. I was put under and then put on pain meds. I don't remember much. The other three grew in and fit, but I may have one of them removed.
  • hey!  Butting in...I'm in dental hygiene school and if you are interested in getting your wisdom teeth out.  Dr. Melvin Blake in marlton is absolutely awesome.  He took my two top wisdom teeth out last august and I barely swelled.  I was also put under and I swear after I went home and took a little nap it was the best sleep ever.  dry socket can be horrible, your more prone to it if you're on birth control(clotting effects), and you shouldn't smoke, drink through a straw, or spit after the surgery...that can be a big factor on whether or not you'll get dry socket.  Dr. Blake is pretty well known...he's claim to fame is he is a oral surgeon and lawyer...his office is a little out dated, but he is great.  Sorry so long!!

  • I know I'm a little late to this but figured I'd contribute anyway. I went for a consultation with an oral surgeon b/c I had been trying to ignore the pain for a while. On the spot, he took out the one that was causing the post problems. I wasn't completely under but enough that when I came to afterwards I was waiting for him to start. Then I got knocked out for the other 3, which was even better. I'm a wuss when it comes to pain but the meds were wonderful. Plus, it eventually goes away and never comes back unlike what happened when I left them in for a while.

Stock up on apple sauce, jello, pudding, ice cream & mashed potatoes. I lived off them for at least a week.

I'm pretty sure it's pronounced your mom's a moron and if you didn't have your name legally changed by the age of 22, so are you. Unless you're from another continent. -Groomz
