Hi! I just saw your reply to my Mexico vacation post and I've been actually meaning to FB message you about it for a couple of days, but kept getting distracted lol. We're going to Playa del Carmen, staying in Grand Sunset Princess Resort. I've been meaning to ask you what you guys did, other than laying out on the beach. We do need to relax, DH is so overstressed at work right now, but I'd love to also do some sightseeing.
Re: **Carrie**
How many days are you going? Here is what we did besides relaxing.
Day 1: We took the ferry to Cozumel and rented a scooter and traveled the island. I highly recommend doing this. We got to see places that you would never get to see on foot. You can go snorkeling in spots that are practically abandoned for a fraction of the price of a catamaran tour.
Day 2: We went to Coba. We chose it over Chichen Itza because it was closer and because you can actually climb it. If you go, make sure to eat a good breakfast and to hydrate. We went on a really hot day and by the end I felt sick and dizzy. But it was beautiful and interesting.
Day 3: Chill out
Day 4: We went on a snorkeling excursion to an ocean inlet, a cave and then a cenote. It was run by Mayan adventure. This was my favorite activity. The guide was extremely knowedgeable and I felt like I had a rare experience. I got to see sea turtles, sting rays and a whole bunch of beautiful tropical fish. The caves are amazing and special. You should definitely do this.
Day 5: We went on our own to Tulum. There is no need to go on a group tour. It's really nice to wander on your own and if you want a guide, you can hire one there, but we opted not to do this. It was a bit rainy and the sea was very rough when we were there but you can bring a towel and go swimming if you would like. We then went into the town of Tulum for lunch. I liked it because it was a sleepy sea town but there is not anything amazing there. You could skip it if you wanted. It's just cheaper and more authentic than Playa. This trip is a good, lazy half day trip. I still felt like I could relax and enjoy myself.
I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Awesome! Thanks for your help
Where did you guys stay? We were looking at some trips last night on travelocity, but I think we may end up booking all the excursions at the hotel, since we clearly have no way of knowing what the weather will be like. I think my DH wants to do a bit more of relaxing than you guys did, but so far we're thinking horse-back riding, swimming with the dolphins and either Coba or Chichen Itza. May also do snorkeling, we'll see depending on time we have.

You should definitely relax. Don't overbook it. The excursions like the snorkeling were not all day so I felt like I still got to relax. One more day of relaxation would have been perfect but it was pouring my last day there anyway. Wait until you get there to book anything because it was a bit rainy when we left. You could look at the companies now and if you like the price of one book there either with someone at the hotel or online.
We stayed at Catalonia Riviera Maya in Puerto Aventuras which is about 25 minutes from Playa. It was a nice hotel but there were problems. I posted a review on trip advisor about them.
When are you leaving?
Aww, I'm sorry you had problems with your hotel, hopefully it wasn't so bad. You still seemed to have a good time
We're leaving on July 31st. And I just got my passport in the mail today, so everything seems to be working out. I'm starting to get really excited!
Again, thank you for all your advice, it's been very very helpful!
