So a couple years ago DHs best man got married and after their wedding he got a big screen tv. Their deal was she got her ring and after the wedding he could get a big tv. DH has been wanting a motorcycle for a couple years now so before we got engaged last summer I told DH if he got the ring I wanted he could get a bike. Now it looks like he's finally found one for a good price that he might get! Even though I will be very worried everytime he gets on it, I'm glad he is finally able to get what he has wanted for a long time now.

Just curious- Has anyone else let their DH make a big purchase post wedding and/or used wedding money for it?

No[t yet]. He splurged and we rented a pontoon on our HM. We are waiting for our tax credit for our house and we are putting 1/2 in savings, and then he is going to get a wall mount & a "bigger sweeter tv" *eye roll* haha. He is a computer freak, but has 8 of the silly things, so with a tv we can both enjoy it

DH wanted a chair for "his" room. He wanted to spend a lot on it but I'd set a "reasonable" limit. I suggested going to the JCP outlet one day and we found a really nice half of a sectional for sale. It was the perfect size for his room (and I loved the price). He's so happy now that I actually sold him on it.

No big splurge purchases yet, that will come after the house renovations/updates that we're working on.
However, our wedding gift from my parents was a 46" flat screen tv with surround sound so I think that will satisfied DH for a while!

DH wants to buy a motorcycle as well, but I think I have him talked into buying an old classic car (thing Sting Ray 'Vette) instead. It's something that we can BOTH enjoy, and if it starts raining, we're OK!

DH had a few friends who got TVs when their FI's got rings, so he joked about it when we first got engaged. I think I wanted a flat panel big screen TV as much as he did, so I bought one last week when I found a good deal at Sam's Club. It was a bit impulsive considering I went out to buy perfume initially...but we both love it. We didn't use wedding money for it though.

This has not come up between us. Actually, he was the one who wanted a big, traditional wedding. I think I would have been just as happy if we went away just the two of us (though I did love my wedding and being surrounded by everyone we love). We are going to splurge on a sectional for our newly renovated living room, but that's about it. And I think we both want the sectional just as much to get rid of our old loveseat.

Ohh my. I've been waiting for this post.

First it was a dirt bike, but I refuse when we have car, house, and student loan debt. Mainly because we own .13 acres. He said he will keep it at a friends, but with working at 2 fire stations I know I he will never have time to drive 1.5 hours to go ride it.

Now, he keeps talking about a motorcyle (mainly because I said if he got anything that is what it would be).

I am trying to explain to him that we are young and all the guys at the station have 10 plus years on us so he shouldn't compare what toys they have that he doesn't. With being in sales and working on comission I am trying to save all we can (while still actively pay off debt) just incase something happens with my job we can pay our bills.

Plus, there are things like furniture, tvs, etc. I would rather have way before a dirt bike or motorcyle.

I don't feel bad, because he got a new truck about 6 months before we got engaged.

Chrissy, I'm in the same place as you! DH thought we'd have so much $$ when he moved up here and took a job that paid more but he's been so disheartened to learn that taxes (higher tax bracket) and retirement has eaten up his income.

I'm a saver and he's not so he just wants to live like everyone else he knows (which is never a good thing for lots of reasons!). I did cave and agree we'd pay for Krav Maga ($1000/yr) on top of his and my gym memberships. It's sickening to see at that $$ go but at least he agreed to saving the majority of his income and live off mine.

I finally told him what we could do if we lived like this and I think he's starting to see why I'm "stingy" with our $$. A trip to Hawaii is quite enticing. Wink

DH has wanted to make a few large purchases, but with buying a house our finances are pretty tight. Even before we got engaged DH wanted to learn how to fly and buy a plane. He also wanted to buy a few new lenses for his camera. Those purchases/hobbies are on the back burner for awhile.

We didn't promise each other anything, but he's getting ready to get a bike this week, too. I'm a little nervous about it, but he'll be fine.

DH bought a boat a few months after we got engaged. He got a really good deal on it and really wanted it, so I jokingly told him it was his engagement present. We also got a very generous gift certificate to Best Buy that we used to buy a flatscreen for the bedroom, but all cash or check wedding gifts went into savings.

Most of the upcoming big ticket items (TV, house, etc) are something we both want so it wouldn't really be a big purchase for DH.

He did get his car before the wedding instead of after like we planned at first, but it made more sense with his long commute to work and the situation with the car dealers.

He bought him a set of golf clubs before the wedding because he and his friends recently got into golfing. There's lots of other golf items he wants, including 5 more clubs. I might give in and let him get it.

Nope, I went against the grain and got him an engagement gift too. (A large power tool for his workshop.) This way he can't complain about having spent a large chunk on me and gotten nothing for himself.

DH's big splurge with wedding money after the wedding was a Litter Robot. It just arrived yesterday and comes up to my knees, it's ridiculous. Our cat is very intimidated by it.

DH isn't a car guy at all, so no cars or bikes or whatever. He did get his piano fixed (several keys were sticking), but he used his "fun money" for that. We have a budget that we do every month and we each get our own money for discretionary purchases like that. Anything else (especially big items) we decide on together. Usually big ticket items are decided on by both of us and individual big items are usually given as gifts. We decided that the wedding money is only going to be used on stuff we will both enjoy/use.
