Passport Question

I have to renew my passport.. it's now expired, and I have to do a name change. Anyone know the steps of how to do this? State Dept.'s website is being super slow and annoying. Just wanted to see if anyone has done this yet - by mail, in person?

Re: Passport Question

  • Mine was not expired, but I printed out the form online, filled it out and sent it in along with my old passport, passport photos and a certified copy of my marriage certificate.  I may have also sent in a copy of my driver's license, but I honestly cannot remember.
  • As long as your previous ppt was issued AFTER you were 16, less than 15 years ago and was fully valid, you can send in the DS-82 by mail. You have to send in your pictures, marrage cert and your expired ppt -- no need to send an ID, your ppt is your ID. This is cheaper because you don't have to pay the execution fee like you do at an acceptance agent.

If your passport is older than 15 years old you need to re-execute. You will fill out the DS-11, go to an agent, they will copy your ID (your ID needs to be in your married name) and you will NOT need to give in your marriage cert - just make sure you answer #21 with your current husbands last name.

82's are faster to process than 11's are. The wait time is about 6 weeks for mail in, non-exediate.

If you aren't leaving anytime soon I would do it now. It will take a while but it is better to have it done than not. It's a real b!tch to get an emergency passport... and it makes me grumpy when I get to work and see lines of people outside the building, lol.

Let me know if you have any questions!

  • Thanks for the info. I'll have to check the issue date on my passport to see how old I was.. I know I was in high school, so I was right around that 16 yr old age.. hopefully I don't have to go through the DS-11 process.

No rush, though, we're planning a trip to Ireland in early Spring so we have plenty of time. Thanks again, ladies.
