Laptop recommendations?

Hubby wants me to go buy a new laptop tonight. Mine is 6 years old and has been giving me problems for the past 5 years. I have it repaired at least 2-3 times a year. Right now, I have a Dell. Do you have any recommendations for a good laptop brand?

Re: Laptop recommendations?

  • HP for sure.  That's what all of ours are.  We've never had problems or anything.  I personally don't care for Dell, neither does Brett & he used to work for them.  My Mom has an eMachine that's pretty good.  You said he wants a new one tonight, but have you tried New Egg?  They have really good computer deals.  Have fun and enjoy whatever you get Smile

  • I asked another board a few weeks ago and after their recs, I bought a Toshiba Satellite.  I really like it so far and it was a pretty good price for the specs.  I've also had a lot of Dell laptops and never really had any problems until a few weeks ago when my 5-year-old one finally died.

The brand we've always had problems with is HP/Compaq.  My last Compaq had a hard drive crash and power failure within about three months.  My mom and brother have both had HPs with problems, too.

  • I've had an Acer for 3+ years.  The only problem was the screen went out right after I got it but that was all covered under warranty so it wasn't a huge deal.

DH has had a Toshiba for over a year and likes it.  Nothing spectacular but no problems with it.

  • My current one is an Acer and I love it!
  • I have a Lenovo and love it.  I believe they bought compac and made it better.  MH has a Toshiba and it lasted about 6 years before it completely died which is pretty good for a laptop.  Happy shopping!
  • MacBook.

  • What are you wanting to do with your laptop? I have been very happy with my Dell, even though it's running much slower these days (after five years). It's been great for storing photos and used to be good for other media stuff, though now it's too slow. Acer, HP, etc. should be fine for very basic use, but Toshibas are probably better than Acer/HP (but I don't that for certian). MacBooks are great for graphic design, video editing, sound recording, etc. GL in your search! Do lots of research!
  • I've had 2 Acers at work and liked both for basic computer work. My personal laptop is an HP. While I like it, it crashed last fall. Thank goodness the tech found out that HP was offering an extended warranty on my model and HP fixed it for free. But a couple of weeks ago the speakers stopped working. So now, if I want to hear anything I have to use headphones. And my laptop is only 2.5 yrs old. I might purchase another HP, but I plan on doing a lot more reasearch this time.
  • I have had an Acer for 3 years and am not a huge fan. It is good for basic stuff but that's it. My problems might have come along because I bought the most basic version and it has absolutely no memory!

My next laptop will NOT be an Acer.

  • Another Mac fan here!  I've had my Macbook for almost three years now and have had no problems with it whatsoever.  The only things I ever did to it were elective -- upgrade the operating system to Leopard when it came out and switched out my hard drive from 60G to 350G.  Sure, Macs can be a little more pricey, but in the long run, I think they are worth it.  I <3 my Macbook!
