So I finally tried Wegmans today...and I wasn't impressed. The produce and meat selections are terrific otherwise I think the store is organized in a very strange way. Anyone feel the same?
Re: Wegmans
Honestly I never figured out why everyone makes such a big deal out if, but I spend 4 years of college with a choice between Wegmans and Tops (like NY's version of Giant) in Rochester, NY - when you've been in scary old Wegmans afraid you were going to get shot and not their new stores it loses the appeal.
DH on the other hand keeps complaining about every other grocery store we have around here and can't wait for the one in Frederick to open as he says that all of the other ones around here have weird layouts and a lack of section. DH grew up in Western NY, so he grew up with Wegmans and I think he is biased.
Cancer sucks.
Heh, I love Wegmans.
I agree the layout is odd. The entire center section of the store is like no-man's land with pre-packaged organics and random furniture/ cooking supplies. I don't care for some of their bakery items - bagels, donuts (not my thing, but for DH), and their bread seems overpriced.
I like that they have a wide selection of things in their store brand: flavors of juices, whole wheat pastas, the soups in the cafe (but NOT the store brand canned soup, ick). I also like some of the individually packaged club pack meats (easy for freezing), and the produce and cheeses.
I love Wegmans but I do not do our every day shopping there. I go there mainly for my "foodie" foods like specialty meats, produce, and cheeses. I usually get the everyday things like cat food and pasta at Giant and regular produce at the farmer's market (or our garden). The downside is that when I go there I end up spending $50 on one basket of groceries.
The closest Wegmans to me is at least a 45 min. drive, but we enjoy shopping there so we make the trip when we do our "big" shopping trip every 4-6 weeks. I do agree that the layout is odd and it does take a bit of getting used to and w/o fail we have to ask where something is every time we're there. But we go and just leisurely shop and could honestly spend hours there. LOVE their store brand stuff too - great quality.
