Anyone watching the MJ Memorial?

They have it playing in the cafe today... people are all taking their lunches at 1pm so they can watch the first hour...

I'm not even sure I agree with this whole thing... he seemed like such a private person (aside when on stage), and that people are happy to have won tickets, very odd to me.

Re: Anyone watching the MJ Memorial?

  • I find it odd too... I can't watch since I'm at work though.
  • I'm watching it right now. I don't know if I'll last for the whole thing, but we'll see.
  • I am watching. I can't imagine having a small, private funeral for Michael Jackson. I mean, this is such a unique situation. What kind of funeral do you have for Michael Jacskon? Where do you bury Michael Jackson? He was such a force, how do you acknowledge that without being tactless and insincere? I believe it was his family that elected to have such a large gathering, and they certainly knew him better than anyone would have.
  • i was going to watch the view and fold laundry but every channel is the memorial so I grabbed my lap top and a fresh coffee and am sitting on my deck instead  :)

I know he was a great entertainer and an icon etc etc but this is over the top.  But I guess that is how he lived too.  It will be over soon enough.

  • Nope.  I am fed up with all the Michael Jackson coverage.  My husband has to keep telling me to calm down when I hear important things on the news that come on after they talk about MJ.  It infuriates me.  I'll stop now before I get worked up again!
  • I suffered through the whole thing... the horrid songs, the melodrama, the proclamations of MJ being the saviour of mankind. Good thing the guy only dies once....
  • I watched it. the whole thing (and then some).

I have to say I thought they hit just right note and did a great job paying tribute to Michael Jackson. I was so moved when his daughter spoke - we've hardly seen her and to witness her gathering up all her courage to speak from such a pure place was heartbreaking.

I was also impressed with Brooke Shields & Magic Johnson - I felt like they shared snipets from his life that very few got to see. I thought the songs were also touching and the artists did a great job on what I'm sure was a very emotional day for them. Hard to perform under pressure like that.

Overall I felt like they had a very fine line to walk to be successful and not tacky. With very little in the way of guidance to follow (who else has had a memorial like this with the world watching - maybe Diana?) my hats are off to his family for sharing their loved one yet again.

  • I only saw clips on the news, but I agree with TuscanaBride's assessment.  It was probably as classy and well done as something like that can be.  Brooke Shields, Usher barely finishing his song and his daughter all made me tear up just from their little clips.

I also liked what one person said to his kids "Your dad wasn't weird, he had to deal with weird situations" or something to that effect.  I thought it was a nice sentiment for them to hold on to.  I think people are forgetting three young kids have lost their dad suddenly and regardless of what you think of him, that alone is sad.

  • TuscanaBride said it perfectly - and thanks for the perspective from the entertainment world.

Surprisingly my husband PVR'd it thinking I would want to see it so I skimmed through it yesterday and thought it was well done, for what it was - as it was said before - how do you do this when it's never been done before and do it properly. A few people went oveboard about him, but overall, I thought it was well done. Including those already mentioned I liked Smokey Robinson at the end as well - it was nice to see the human side of MJs life.
