Passport Dilema

So yesterday I went to social security and to the DMV to change my last name all went well accept the crazy lady at the DMV punched holes in my DL !!!!! WTF!!!! I told her "Ummm I need that DL I am leaving for Cancun at the end of the month and my passport has my maiden last name" she said "oh it should be ok you should need to use your CA ID since you have your passport" so I reluctentaly said ok and left but now It just dawned on me that my airline ticket has my maiden last name! I have my DL put it has a whole in the strip and on the experation date. Im so stressed out now I am gonna have to travel with my married DL and maiden DL and marriage certificate and both my ss cards and my passport with my maiden last name what if I loose something I really wish she would of asked before she just started punching holes in my stuff! :0(

Re: Passport Dilema

  • Once you change your name your old DL becomes invalid and they punch a hole in it for your protect so someone cant take your old license and parade around as you.

As far as your trip is concerned, you dont need to show your drivers license if you are carrying your passport. They only require one form of ID so if your ticket has your maiden name just show them your passport at check in and avoid showing the DL. I'd still bring a copy of your marriage license (dont take the real thing) just to be on the safe side but you should be fine.

FWIW our company's travel agent sent out an email not that long ago saying your tickets for international travel should always be booked with the name on your passport.

ETA: You should NEVER travel with your ss card!

  • If your passport and airline tickets are both with your maiden name you should be fine. I agree with Noush that a copy of your marriage cert is a good idea. No need to take your SS card at all!
  • Same crap happened to me last month when we went to Vegas.

Take along the old DL, and the new paper that they gave you. You should be fine. I'm sure you aren't the only one who has had this happen.

    GL!

  • After I changed my last name, I still carried my old (hole-punched) license with me in case I needed to verify who I was. From what I remember, I only used it once.

When I went to Canada, the only ID they ever needed was my passport. As long as the name on the airline ticket and passport match, you shouldn't have a problem.

  • What everyone else said. As long as your Passport has the same name as the ticket you should be good. Bring along both DL and a copy of your MC just in case, but I doubt you'll need it.
  • Yup, what everyone else said. Your old DL becomes invalid once you change your name. All you need is your passport and your plane ticket and you're good.

I also wantd to second what Noosh said about traveling with your SS card...never ever carry it with you! If (God forbid) you lose it, that's all someone needs to steal your identity.  You should leave it at home in a safe spot. I believe it even says right on the card not to carry it with you.

    Have fun in Cancun!

  • Thank you girls! I was stressing out about this!
Im so excited this is gonna be our first big family vacation :0)!!!!
We've done San Diego and Vegas with the boys but never anything this big so we are soo excited! :0)
