The chutes on Guadalupe/Comal??

We are going to float the river and have heard that the horseshoe and chutes are the best parts, I have found the horseshoe but cant find the cutes....does anyone know where they are?  any other advice for floating the river?

Thanks!

Re: The chutes on Guadalupe/Comal??

  • I think you're referring to Truman Falls aka Clutter Rapid -- it's the 4th rapid on the stretch of the river that starts at First Run (Dam 6) and goes to Cypress Bend Park.

    In order:

    1.  Hueco Springs
    2.  Slumber Falls (on river right)
    3.  Slant Wave (on river left)
    4.  Truman Falls - river flow cuts to the left over and forms a chute over several large boulders (lots of fun, but a big pile up of toobers)
    5.  Gruene Rapid - boulder garden (there's a biker bar on the right -- and easy takeout and shuttle service here, but I don't know if this where you get out)
    6.  Dog Leg
    7.  Common Street Wave (under the Common Street bridge)

  • (Unless it's further down, but that's the only "chute" I remember!)
  • ok great thanks for all the info Smile

  • I went down 2 or 3 weeks ago and the Guadalupe is loooooooooooow (therefore slow and rather stagnat in places) Probably the lowest that I've seen it with it still being open.

Typically I prefer the Guadaupe, but unless you go after a big rain, I would plan on the Comal.

  • We were just there 6/28-7/2.  The Guadalupe was LOW and warm!  No bueno.  But I think they opened up a dam on 7/2 for the 4th wkd.  Not sure the status now.  The Comal was great!  Cool and refrehsing, a little low, but that makes for a longer float!  We floated it three days in a row.  The tube chute on the Comal is hard to miss.  It's at the city park.  If you're going to float the Comal (which I would recommend unless Guadalupe has drastically risen) rent tubes @ Landa Falls (Wurstfest).  It's a little more expensive than some of the others (TX tubes, Corner Tubes) but it's the "longest float on the comal" and worth it.

ETA:  general advice: follow the river rules on the comal.  It's not worth a ticket.  Bring SUNSCREEN and reapply!  Wear a hat.

  • General Tips

-lots of waterproof sunscreen (bring it; you'll need to reapply)

    -lots of water

-if you're drinking, don't drink too much (it's easy when it's so hot)

-bring rope to tie all of your toobs together or to keep up with the ice chest (others may not like to do this, we do so we don't get separated)

  • wow thanks for all the great advice!!  it looks like we will prob be floating the Comal!!
