Employee Standards Act Q:
If I work 8:30 am ? 5:00 pm what am I entitled to in regards to lunch & break [by law]?
Apparently with my company you have a ? hr unpaid lunch & No official breaks.
You may use the washroom, get coffee etc. 5-10 min max BUT it?s not considered a ?break? like the 15 min ones.
For some reason that doesn?t sound right. Am I going nutso?

Re: Employee Standards Act Q:
From the ESA:
An employee must not work for more than five hours in a row without getting a 30-minute eating period (meal break) free from work. The law does not require an employer to provide any breaks in addition to this eating period. However, if the employer does provide another type of a break, such as a coffee break, and the employee must remain at his or her workplace during the break, the employee must be paid at least the minimum wage for that time.
Not required to get a break.
OK thanks Pam...
Your hours are pretty standard with what other companies have. You are paid for 8 hours a day and work 8.5 to account for your 30 min lunch.
I have also seen it where you are paid for 37.5 hours a week, get an hour for lunch, work 8 hours a day. So half of lunch is paid and half is not.
How strict is your company on enforcing this? Do you have to punch in and out each day?
Well an email went out today that they've noticed everyone taking 1 hr lunches and they reminded everyone that it is not our 'policy' to do so.
They seem to be more on top of it now. I know some people starting this week are having to "email punch in and out" to their managers.
Things are getting bad and I guess they're trying to find any excuse to let people go. Disobey = home
