Which airline when travel with 2 kids

My sister and I are going to see our grandfather in washington.  We are going in Oct.  I have a 2 year old (3 in dec) she has a 3 year old.  We will have the car seats and would like to preboard if they let us.  We are lookin at south west and alaska airlines.  Out of these 2 which is best traveling with kids.  Also do these charge to check bags.  We will have 2-3 each.

Re: Which airline when travel with 2 kids

  • I don't *think* Southwest charges, but I'm not sure. I don't fly either of those so I can't give a preference, but SW seems to have quite a few kids on the flights I have been on in the past.
  • Southwest doesnt charge for checked bags.  They only allow certain people to preboard BUT they do have a family boarding option between groups A and B.  Southwest still offers snacks on longer flights.

I havent flown Alaska in over 23 years so I have no idea how they are now!

  • Southwest does not charge for the first 2 bags (you can check 2 per ticket).  They do charge for the 3rd but I dont remember how much.

Alaskan now charges $15 for the first bag checked per person and $25 for the second bag and $50 for the third bag (they just started charging for the first bag yesterday).

I have flown Southwest countless times w/one child. They do not allow families w/small children to preboard anymore.  They let the A group board (which if you check in online for your flight 24 hrs in advance you should likely end up in anyways) then they let the families w/children board then they let the rest of the plane board.  Even if you don't check in early enough, you will be able to all get seats together and have enough time to board if you go between group A and group B.

I have never flown Alaska air w/my daughter but I am pretty sure they did allow family w/kids to preboard.

  • You didn't mention it, but avoid USAir.  They were awful.  We had the 2 kids, 2 car seats, carryons, and they wouldn't help us on the plane.  We asked and they said no and proceeded to just stand there and stare at us.  We stood in the gate in a panic until 2 passengers felt sorry for us and helped us carry everything on.

We have flown SWA and they were much better.  They will help you if you need it.  Like PP said, though, they don't have the family preboarding so you have to do your best to get in group A and get to the front of the line in that group.  We've flown 3 times now with the kids and my favorite was Continental.  They help and have family preboarding (but they do charge for bags).

I'd like to make a recommendation about seats that would make your trip soooo much easier.  Look into renting the CARES harness rather than carrying on their car seats.  We did this out last flight and it was tremendously easier to fly without lugging those seats on the plane (we just checked them with out luggage, and that doesn't cost anything).
