Since I'm new here I'd thought I'd introduce myself.
I'm Karen. I've been married for 2 years. I'm orignially from Northern KY/Cincinnati. I grew up 5 mins from downtown Cincinnati. We just moved to the North Shore. We don't have any children. Just the best pets ever (3 cats, 1 dog). Prior to moving here I had never left NKY. Moving here was big and scary. We moved here because my husband got a job in Covington. We're renting now but we hope to buy a house in a year and half...maybe longer if I don't get a job!!!
Anyway, just wanted to introduce myself. I'm up for a GTG if anyone else is. If you guys have any suggestions for things to do locally that are cheap or free, I'm open to it. Any restaurants, festivals, fairs, ice cream shops?
Re: Getting to know you (and me)
You just missed it, BUT the last Friday of every month is the block party in downtown Covington. I've never actually been, but we accidentally came upon it a week or so ago and it looked interesting (but we were on our way to see the Dark Knight!) might be a good way to get yourself out there and meet some locals!
?I live on Northshore as well, but work on the southshore, I'm new to the area, so I don't know too much and I feel like I'm constantly in my car!??
?Though thanks to you I know of a somewhat dog park for my beast of a lab!??

I'm new to the area and I was just telling sparkman-to-be that we should do a get together. I'm also on the northshore but I, too, do the commute across the lake every day.
It sounds like you all have some really great ideas of things to do...I'll have to check some of them out.
I'm dying to know--where is this "dog park" that is mentioned. I have a 3 year old GSP and I'd love to take her someplace other than around my sub-division!
I'm actually extremely disappointed in the dog parks. There aren't any free, fenced in, parks that I know of on the North Shore. We went to the levee on the corner of Magazine and Leak (sp?) last Saturday but we're still working on getting Mason to listen to us when he's off his leash and he heads right for the street! (And I'm lazy. I'm all for a fenced in area to let him run and me sit on my @ss with a book).
However, I went to one in the Quater on Daupine and it was nice. We parked WAAAAAY too far away from it but it was fenced in, huge, lots of shade, and they have a water source.
I tried to get my hubby to go to the block party a few weeks ago but he'd worked all day (it was his first full week) and he was worn out. I'm gonna look into these ideas too! These are great!
I still don't have a job. My husband turned my resume in at his job but I'd rather not work with my spouse. I have been in purchasing for years but I'm open to anything.
Do you definitely want to work on the North Shore?

I'd like to but it's not looking promising. If I need to go across the lake, I will. I just need a job.
Hi I'm Traci and I'm in Mandeville. My husband works in downtown NOLA, says the commute isn't that bad really. I work in Slidell and it's not too bad of a drive either.
As for stuff to do, at the Mandeville Trailhead we have "Free Music Friday." Again it's bands and food. We were having a yoga class that met there on Wednesday morning, but I'm not sure if that's still going on. They also have a farmers market at the trailhead every Sat. But the one in Covington (on sat and wed) is so much better. They also have a yoga school in Covington if that's your thing. They have an awesome Labryinth for meditation. It's very nice. There's also an Aveda school in Covington, and you can get spa treatments for little to nothing, and I've been there and it's very nice considering what you are paying.
Pick up your Gambit because it will have listings for the Northshore too. That's the only way I find out about stuff.
I would definitely look at nola.com for jobs. When we were looking to move down here it was the best resource for local jobs. I just did a quick search under "purchasing" and it looks like there are 16 options that came up. Check out the Buyer job with Ion or the recovery school district one. There are actually a few good options.
If you willing to switch feilds I would encourge you to look at Tulane. They usually have a wide range of positions and you can go back and work on your degree for free as an employee (6 hrs a semester). So that could be a good option, but their hiring system is slow so don't expect to hear anything really quickly.

Im Jessica and married for almost 3 months now. I grew up in Mississippi, lived in Nashville for a sec but inevitably moved back home. Moved down here to be with dh (then fi) when we got engaged. We live in Jefferson which is a hop, skip, jump away from New Orleans and Metairie. We have two poodle mix puppies (see siggy) Sue is the blonde and Jazz is the black one.
Oh and no job for me either
Hi there! Newly married here, although J and I might as well have been married the last six years. Haven't posted much here but I'll try to more. We both are born and bred here and now live in Kenner on the southshore. Didn't realize there were so many northshore ladies here! Good luck with everything and welcome to the area!
Ditto Abita Springs.?
I mean really, the town is tiny, how have we not run into each other... ?
