Half-Marathon.... To do or not to do?

Well, for the past week I have been busy looking for races for sign up for now that I've gotten back into running. I hope to do some 5k or 10k races. (I'm not fast, but hopefully I'll hold a steady pace and finish). Now, I found a half marathon on Halloween which I really want to sign up for. I've researched the needed training and think I could do it. I'm just nervous that if I spend the $50 and sign up, something will happen that I get hurt, can't do it, etc...

I've been posting some on the H&F board to get advice, but thought I would get your take as well! It's amazing how much more fun it is to run now that I have goals in mind.

P.S. My running guide book claims that most people are physically capable of being able to run a full (not just a half) marathon if they train and put in the time. I think this peice of advice is what most convinced me I could probably do this... It's an interesting statement, and likely more true than I would have thought:)

Re: Half-Marathon.... To do or not to do?

  • I think you are definitely more than able to be ready to run a half by halloween!! That's soo awesome!!!  I mean the people on the biggest loser were trained I think like in 6 weeks or something to run a full marathon or something, you can definitely do it maam!!!  How does the training go to get prepared for the half?  Do you just increase your miles everyday?  I'm not a fast runner either, I care more about how far I go than the pace I'm making :)
  • Megan, you slowly add miles to your long runs and focus on some speed work and some easier runs for your short runs. The plan I'm going to follow is only 1 long run per week, which seems fairly normal across all plans. I had gotten a generic plan online, but then a gal on the H&F board pointed out the Smart Coach plans from runnersworld.com

It's super easy, you just create a free log-in ID. Then, you click on the "training" tab along the top. There is a smart coach box on the right side of the web page. You just put in a past race time (or your 1-mile time). Then you pick what race you want to train for, how long you have to get ready, and a few other options. It's a REALLY cool way to see a realistic plan to do any race you want!! I'm so glad I found this little tool.

  • Ok I love this website!!!  This totally inspires me too! I went running yesterday and it was sooo nice, I"ve missed it!!  I want to get those runner abs!! Haha how does that happen??  Are you doing the first half marathon training? I just saw that article and alot of people in the reviews said it was really good :)
  • Yeah, I am pretty much addicted to this website. I get on these kicks of being super pumped, and yesterday I could hardly get any work done because I kept surfing around the runnersworld website. Maybe you're going to get "bit" by the race bug too!!

Also, yes my very 1st half marathon. I'm following the plan that the smart coach created for me.
