I don't have many of these, as for the most part I either don't really talk to my FIL (he's a quiet man) and really we get along... but this drives me crazy!
It's my MIL's 60th this coming week and there has been not one word spoken of a party/dinner - my IL's just don't think or do these things (ie - I organized their 40th anniversary dinner as their kids forgot about it). So I get a call last night from SIL saying there is a dinner next Saturday for her, we're away (a pre booked vacation, that we booked in February) but get this - FIL organized the whole thing with his side of the family and didn't tell his own kids! He just told everyone last night, my SIL has to cut her vacation short, my BIL whose house it's apaprently at had no idea and had plans and we're out of town. And FIL full on expects us to change our plans. (btw I fully offered this weekend and the 25th as alternatives and would have moved plans)
So I did the good wife thing and said to Adam that if he wanted we could wait til Sunday (and lose 2 nights that we paid for) to join my family - thankfully he said no, that his father should have checked with his kids first and will not make me or my family time suffer because we planned this months and months ago.
FIL is upset that we're not changing our plans... but seriously! Who calls a family dinner (esp for a 60th bday) with 10 days notice in the middle of July and thinks that we can all just drop our plans and go. Now we get to deal with FIL (who doesn't let things go) for the rest of the summer being upset with us for not bending to this...
No real point... just had to get it out...
Re: FIL vent....
That would annoy me too. Not very thoughtful at all, eh?
To answer your question on who does things like that....... people who don't often plan events (I would like to say most men but I hate to generalise like that)
At least your DH is understanding and probably really appreciates the fact that you were willing to give up some of your vacation.
MIL does stuff like that all the time - and never learns.
She called the day before Mike's birthday to see if we'd want to have a party for him at her house the next day. ????
Yeah, like all 8 of us adults would be available.... (?)
*shakes head*
I'm sorry about FIL, Sarah. Hopefully he'll clue in and not pull a stunt like this again (maybe my MIL will clue in one day too)
